James Gary Sheets

James Gary Sheets has built nearly three decades of experience in health care leadership, taking responsibility for hospitals, regional markets, service lines, and complex operations. His approach has emphasized careful listening, straightforward priorities, team development, and attention to patients and caregivers. Most recently, he served as a regional president, overseeing eight hospitals and roughly 150 clinics across Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. His region included about 12,000 team members and 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers.

In that position, James Sheets was accountable for strategy, growth, quality, safety, financial performance, and the everyday experience of patients and caregivers. He established three central priorities: safety and quality, engaged caregivers, and stewardship. His multi-year operational improvement plan produced financial gains in its first year while patient satisfaction remained steady. The region also increased its quality and safety scores and brought its health plan into Colorado through a partnership with a leading local system.

James's eighteen years of combined service with the same health system included a series of expanding leadership roles. As a chief operating officer, he directed acute operations across 21 hospitals in Utah and Idaho, together with surgery centers, telehealth, air ambulance, and outreach services. Under his leadership, the region exceeded financial targets, reached the top tier of national quality rankings, and improved caregiver engagement and safety culture. He also developed an ambulatory surgery center division, opened a community hospital, planned modernization of flagship facilities, and integrated an acquired air medical company into an existing flight operation.

Previously, Jim Sheets managed telehealth and outreach services across eight states, rebuilding virtual care and consolidating it into one modern hub. During the pandemic, his team increased video visits by a factor of a thousand and expanded virtual programs across behavioral health, remote monitoring, oncology, and other areas. His career also included serving as a hospital CEO and Administrator and later overseeing ten hospitals as a Group President.

James Gary Sheets earned two master's degrees and a bachelor's degree in business management, graduating cum laude. He taught future health care executives for nearly a decade, served on numerous boards, raised millions of dollars for health care causes, and volunteered in his community. He and his wife, a kindergarten teacher, raised five children, and he enjoys golfing, skiing, reading, backpacking, and college football.
