Joan Roig Carcellé, our president and founder, hails from generations of boat builders, a family tradition that goes back more than 100 years.   3. Increased impact resistance If the impact is significant, the GRP

    vessel may fissure on the surface layers of the laminate but it generally does not crack or break completely. The elastic nature of GRP construction means our boats have an increased capacity for shock absorption and structural shape memory and therefore less maintenance in general. NASAI marine services Advantages of Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) Minimal maintenance costs The cost of maintaining a GRP boat is 60% less than an aluminum boat in the first 5 years of use. Beyond 5 years, the maintenance costs of aluminum triples, and GRP remains constant. Repair of the structure of the composite laminate boat is done by hand and does not require highly skilled personnel or special conditions. Total resistance to corrosion The composite hull does not suffer galvanic attack and corrosion protection is only needed for the metallic elements in the steering and propulsion of the boat. The hull of the boat is protected from osmosis by using vinyl ester resin in its first 2 layers. Highly resistant to fatiguing forces Our test trials indicate that the fatigue strength of aluminum ships is very low compared with a GRP boat of similar thickness. The aluminum boat “ages” promptly by structural fatigue after 5 years of use and this causes cracks in the hull. Some of our GRP boats have been in service for 17 years and they are still not showing any signs of fatigue. Light weight material Traditionally, aluminum boats have been estimated to be 20% lighter than laminated composite boats. However, our boats are built using a modern sandwich laminate infusion method which results in a lighter construction, making our GRP boats roughly equivalent in weight to their aluminum counterparts.
