The Manifreshto Challenge Richard F Agile Coach Chris Y Agile Coach

Slide 2

Slide 2 text

Why take the challenge? to reacquaintance ourselves with how relevant the Agile Manifesto is in a period of systemic uncertainty and chaos. to revisit the underpinnings of Agile environments and to take a creative approach to thinking about other important factors within those contexts. It will be emotive, possibly divisive for some of you but it should also be light hearted so have fun with it and collaborate with us. ! ! C

2 simple rules 1) The Manifesto values are ‘all-encompassing’ so whatever you come up with has to resonate within all scenarios in an Agile environment/context. 2) The Manifesto is brutally simple - you have to do it in no longer than 3 words either side of the ‘over’ qualifier. C

Leadership over Management Managers embrace process, seek stability and control… Leaders, in contrast, tolerate chaos and lack of structure…. Abraham Zaleznik - Managers and Leaders. Are they different? (HBR 2004)

Slide 27

Slide 27 text

Henri Fayol (1841–1925) considered management to consist of five functions: 1. planning (forecasting) 2. organising 3. commanding 4. coordinating 5. controlling What is management in an Agile Environment? directing and controlling a group of people or an organization to reach a goal (https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management)

Slide 28

Slide 28 text

What is leadership in an Agile environment? “...the capacity to translate vision into reality” (Warren Bennis) “..leaders will be those who empower others” ( Bill Gates) the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal (Susan Ward Sept 2020) https://www.thebalancesmb.com/leadership-definition-2948275) organisational structures governance and processes people and talent

What is Chris’s second suggestion to add?

Slide 30

Slide 30 text

Simplicity over complexity Pareto Principle - 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes In 1963 IBM found that about 80% of a computers time was spent executing only 20% of instructions They rewrote the Operating System to make the 20% faster and easier to use, improving computer performance.

Slide 31

Slide 31 text

The simplest solution is the one that solves the problem with the minimal amount of complexity Simplicity over complexity MVP (minimum viable product), a product with just enough features that it is useful, and successfully completes its main task

Agile Manifesto is of course still very valid You can’t easily change something that has stood the test of time and scrutiny over the past 20 years. We also think all of our suggestions are in some way underpinned by the 12 Principles #manifreshtochallenge Keep the conversation going!! C
