Commission Goal: Create an art installation that would cover the front windows of the soon to be home of Albany Park Theatre Project’s production “Port of Entry”. It would ideally tie into the Albany Park neighborhood and production’s content, while also keeping in mind the engagement people would have with the piece as a window graphic. Other than that, the content is free reign. The Making Of: City of Boxes | “We Make this Place Our Home” Copyright ⓒ Schantelle Alonzo

Because of that, I wanted to create a piece that would delve into three primary themes: - TIME: Albany Park has a rich history as the docking neighborhood to a lot of different immigrant groups over the decades. - COMMUNITY: Growing up here, I’ve seen how multicultural this neighborhood was. I wanted to illustrate the vibrant cultures I have engaged with. - PERSONAL STORIES: Besides the previous two, APTP’s productions emphasize the power of a personal story the most. I wanted to incorporate that and tell a myriad of stories across the piece. The Making Of: City of Boxes | “We Make this Place Our Home” Copyright ⓒ Schantelle Alonzo

Initial Sketches These were a solid start as per the reference images, but still felt too “flat” to me- this was an opportunity to push dimensions while still telling a story. The Making Of: City of Boxes | “We Make this Place Our Home” Copyright ⓒ Schantelle Alonzo
