Baylor College of Medicine mines science papers to make new discoveries Business Need •  While well-studied, p53 is implicated in many cancers, and there is still a need to uncover new relationships between p53 gene, protein, chemicals, and bio-mechanisms •  Needed a solution to build, extract, and understand key entities from the literature, such as chemicals, genes, proteins, profiles, relationships, ontologies, networks Watson Benefits •  Mined the literature and retrieve specific gene interactions, and display them for study •  Mapped and discovered relationships between p53 and relevant genes and networks •  Validated current p53 knowledge and, at a rate much faster than current methods, revealed new unknown interactions for further analysis

Tap into it. 9 9 Client interested in repurposing drugs for other conditions, including the treatment of malaria Business Need •  It took 10 of their scientists 14 months of research to identify 12 potential candidates for the treatment of malaria •  The process of discovery needed to be accelerated Watson Benefits •  In just a few weeks, Watson uncovered evidence of 11 candidates that could effect the pathway involved in malaria •  Of the 11 candidates found, 6 matched those the company identified •  The 5 additional candidates were some that the company had never considered, and are currently under investigation

Tap into it. 11 11 Janssen sought to quickly perform a robust comparison of treatments Business Need •  Across 3,000 studies, Janssen wanted to improve the sophistication and speed of the comparison of multiple treatments against each other •  Assembling the correct data from 1,000s of clinical trials to effectively compare efficacy and safety of multiple potential treatments for a disease or condition •  Current process is manual, slow, expensive and prone to error Watson Benefits •  Watson accelerated the gathering of data from 1,000s of trials to minutes instead of months •  Watson will enable researchers to analyze the effectiveness and safety of various treatments for different populations of patients
