#MakingSenseEU The Making Sense approach was tested in nine pilots across Europe, to address a range of environmental issues in very different sociopolitical contexts. PILOT STRATEGY

Slide 20

Slide 20 text

SENSING Open source technologies that gather environmental data With communities across Europe, we will be co- creating sensors & devices that use the Smart Citizen platform to capture environmental data. #MAKINGSENSEEU

Slide 21

Slide 21 text

AWARENESS Enabling and designing platforms for collective sensemaking We'll be testing tools and methodologies for making sense of data in pilots in Amsterdam, Barcelona & Prishtina, and raising awareness of social and environmental issues. #MAKINGSENSEEU

Slide 22

Slide 22 text

ACTION Moving on a trajectory from awareness to positive change With the pilot learnings we will develop the Making Sense toolkit - a set of resources to organise citizen sensing campaigns for positive social change. #MAKINGSENSEEU

FAB KIDS LAB Exploring analogue and digital sensing, to better build bird feeders The Making Sense Barcelona team collaborated with a group of 15 students aged 9-14 years old to explore the potential of both analogue and digital sensing to provide a clearer picture of how pollution can affect local bird species. users 15 PARTICIPANTS wifi Water, Soil, Air ISSUE city Barcelona LOCATION

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS Infrastructuring the next generation of activists The Barcelona pilot trains a committed group of environmental activists in the tools and methodologies needed to conduct participatory sensing campaigns. The first pilot will map and address the issue of noise pollution, and collective resources. users 50 PARTICIPANTS wifi Noise ISSUE city Barcelona LOCATION

PLAÇA DEL SOL The Neighbourhood Versus The Noise. The Plaça del Sol in Barcelona is a town square that has historically suffered from the noise of drinking into the early hours of the morning by crowds drawn from near and far. Working with the Making Sense team in Barcelona, the neighbourhood association of the Plaça del Sol has been researching and measuring how high in relation to the norm are noise levels around the plaça, and what can be to improve the situation. users 20 PARTICIPANTS wifi Noise ISSUE city Barcelona LOCATION

The Fab City Research Laboratory looks at small scale interventions as triggers for large scale impact in cities and society. Located at IAAC in Barcelona, it operates within the Fab Lab network, and uses it as a distributed source of local knowledge, invention and action in order to address global challenges in an open source and collaborative philosophy. „
