@jcasabona Our plan failed because we didn’t understand the enemy (or problem)

Slide 8

Slide 8 text

It’s good to have a plan, if you understand the problem.

@jcasabona How I Built It

Slide 10

Slide 10 text

@jcasabona How Did You Built That? • How did you come up with the idea? • What kind of research did you do? • How did you build it? • What are your plans for the future?

@jcasabona How did you come up with the idea?

Slide 12

Slide 12 text

@jcasabona • Original Idea: Live, in-person classes. • I used to teach in a classroom, but knew I was moving. • Pivot 1: Webinars • Building an audience for in-person classes is near impossible outside big cities. Webinars teach people specific things! • Pivot 2: Online Courses

@jcasabona What kind of research did you do?

Slide 14

Slide 14 text

@jcasabona • In the beginning, not much • “I think it’s a good idea, and it doesn’t really exist.” • Feedback from customers (and non-customers helped) • The pivot to online courses was a result of research • Lots of conversations, reading, seeing writing on the wall

I’m doing a lot more now.

@jcasabona How did you built it?

Slide 17

Slide 17 text

@jcasabona • I started with WooCommerce and Sensei • …Sensei is…not very good. • I switched over to LearnDash, and I’m super happy! • I still use WooCommerce for the shop, since I don’t just sell courses • Memberships were going to be LD —> Woo —> PMPro • Decided to use Skyverge Memberships instead

Slide 18

Slide 18 text

If I did it again today, I’d probably just use LearnDash.

Slide 21 text

@jcasabona What are Your Plans for the Future?

Slide 22

Slide 22 text

@jcasabona • First and foremost, more courses! • Beaver Builder Master Class, and more “site specific” courses • Memberships • Better ways to connect with students to improve engagement • Video Captions • More Automation

Slide 23

@jcasabona I always end by asking my guests for a trade secret…

@jcasabona –Ed Catmull “It’s folly to think you can avoid change, no matter how much you might want to. But also, to my mind, you shouldn’t want to. There is no growth or success without change.”
