IS THIS SUSTAINABLE? Key pieces of Open Source Software (OSS), of which many applications depend on, are often supported by small groups of individual contributors with no financial support or contractual obligation to do so. This has created a landscape in which the goodwill of a few can no longer sustain the increasing demands the ecosystem places on them. #FUNDL | TruffleCon 2019

The Starfish Story One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one. Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”. The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?” The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!” #FUNDL | TruffleCon 2019

THE PROBLEM Providing funding to sustain open source projects is beyond the scope of modern day financial systems. Wide-scale solutions will need to be borderless, trustless, and driven by technology - not human effort. In short, Web 2.0 technology is incapable of providing a solution. #FUNDL | TruffleCon 2019 real
