Slide 12 text
“When sounding in deep water, it is often
necessary to lessen the speed in order to get a
depth accurately, and to ascertain the character of
the bottom. The steam vessel does this easily,
without diverging from her track; the sail vessel
must change her course and lie to. By this, time
is lost, labor is increased, and the continuity of
the lines is broken”.
