Growth Mindsets Preparing our students for a College and Career readiness future that embraces a love of learning, making mistakes, building persistence, and finding a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Fixed Mindset –VS- Growth Mindset

Slide 7

Slide 7 text

Embrace your Growth Mindset Realistically we are a mixture of both mindsets • Nurture growth mindsets in our students and move beyond just pushing them toward effort. • Help students identify new strategies and approaches so that effort can be productive. • Don’t praise intelligence or abilities but do praise the process and effort! Everyone has a combination of Growth and Fixed mindsets in different areas.

Re-Imagine Schools The authentic learning of the child is respected versus a curriculum pacing rate. School-Centric • Set grades • Set times • Grade level skills • Differentiated requirements of teaching • Uncontrolled external circles • Teach to the whole where focus is on the middle Learner-Centric • Monitor students with a growth minded target • Time not an obstacle • Fluid systems (grouping and looping) • Joy of learning • Learning rates are different for each child • Parameters of a school day

Slide 9

Slide 9 text

Learner-Centric Classroom Teachers in a learner-centric classroom: • committed to personalized learning • teach using their strengths • don’t teach 4-6 disciplines • shift from givers of information to facilitating student learning • focus becomes student learning where research shows a higher rate of student retention • support students in building a strong knowledge foundation and building positive teacher-student relationships • are grounded in reflection and revision: give constructive feed back where the use of assessment is part of the learning process • model “grit” through toughness and determination

• Every year in the United States, nearly 60% of incoming students need remedial work in English or Mathematics. • We lose 40% of our teachers in the first 4 years nationwide. • Many schools work under the mentality that teachers can “plug their students in” and let the curricula do the rest. • Quantile is a framework of data where we can finally push a rethinking of school-centric school practices. School-Centric Schools

MetaMetrics Quantile Framework • Consistent and incremental process – Students can see success on a micro level with their learning progression. They have a growth mindset of persevering through improvement and making mistakes. • Skills (particular and impending) – Because of quantile measures we can now teach to specific needs of students and validate it. These needs offer a growth mindset of training their brain learning from others, and using different strategies. • Small wins repeated over time – Our challenge is to recognize when MetaMetrics puts forth quantile measurements we now have data to make changes in the classroom over time. Quantile Framework Setting Micro-Goals

Samantha’s Current Micro-Goal Samantha’s micro-goal is to: “Convert measures of length, area, capacity, weight, and time expressed in a given unit to other units in the same measurement system in number and word problems.” (QSC 258) She is struggling with this particular skill. What can her teacher do? Samantha, Grade 5

Samantha’s Career Macro-Goal Samantha, Grade 5 To be an electrician, Samantha must be able to: “Convert within or between American Wire Gauge (AWG), metric, and customary systems when working with electrical wire.” Applied Standards Training Achievement Record Line Items - Mathematics for Electrical, Job Corps

Quantile Framework Setting Macro-Goals • We can now promote personalized data and create the school and classroom shift that works for the student and the teacher. – Empower students to reach goals through a desire to learn – Monitor growth by potential • Motivate students through a joy of learning – Show that goals are obtainable • Plan for College and Career Ready – Begin with the end in mind – See effort as a path to mastery
