In this paper, author Ethan Mollick guides the reader through seven use cases (roles) for AI implementation in a classroom setting. In this article, author Ethan Mollick details the variety of ways to utilize ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter. In particular, he showcases its capabilities in data visualization and analysis. Throughout my research, I apply and expand on Mollick’s use cases, notably the Coach, Tool, and Mentor roles, in seeking optimal approaches to leveraging AI for student success in business communication courses. Proficiency in data visualization and analysis is paramount for efficient business communication. Mollick’s article directly aligns with and enriches the core objectives and methodologies of my research. Upholding Academic Integrity in a Digital Era Ensuring GenAI Augments, Not Replaces, Critical Thinking Navigating the Ethical Maze “Large language models aren’t going to get less capable in the next few years. We need to figure out a way to adjust to these tools, and not just ban them.” - Ethan Mollick Source: Don’t Ban ChatGPT in Schools. Teach With It.

Why don’t you use AI for school? Feels like cheating The overwhelming majority of students express concern surrounding “being caught” using AI for assignments, with many claiming it “feels dishonest” or “violates academic integrity” “It takes me more work to input the best words to get the outcome I want” compared to just doing it myself A few students worry that while “the ideas are mine, the wording isn’t”, and that they “want stuff to come out of my brain” Students remark that they “don’t trust” the reliability of GenAI output, stating that “not all output is legit” and “the tools aren’t good enough yet” Replaces critical thinking Don’t know how/too much work Doubt its output Source: Instagram survey. Written Communication My Approach Ethan Mollick’s “AI as a Coach” use case to aid in self-reflection Incorporating existing, personalized sources (i.e. resume) to tailor output Inputting guidelines to model work off of (ie. assignment rubric and examples), as well as aid in formatting and revision Pros: Offers diverse goal suggestions that students might overlook Cons: Lack of understanding context might lead to suggestions misaligned with personal goals Creating: Generate curated goals based on identified weaknesses Analysis: Dissect vast amounts of provided information, pinpointing areas of improvement Pros & Cons Taxonomy Key Takeaway: GenAI aids in tailored memos, but transparency and authenticity are key. Preserve genuine tone and uphold ethical standards.

Slide 17 text

Presentations My Approach Identifying how AI can be utilized in each step of the presentation process: Content, Organization, Delivery, & Feedback Identify and explore potential tools to aid in the presentation process Pros: Offers enhanced efficiency, tailored content, and dynamic data integration at scale Cons: Risks potential authenticity concerns, ethical implications, and over-reliance Creating: Designing visually appealing slides, generating infographics, suggesting innovative ways to present information Analysis: Breaking down complex ideas into digestible, presentation-friendly insights Pros & Cons Taxonomy Key Takeaway: When used as a tool to enhance – not replace – personal input, GenAI can consistently streamline tailored presentations while ensuring the user’s unique voice remains central

Slide 18

Slide 18 text

AI for Presentations Guideline Step When to Use How to Use Content At the onset to determine theme + content scope When topic is broad and needs refinement Research assistance Summarization + extracting key insights Organization After content is compiled When adapting/rearranging content for different audiences Guide for optimizing structure: slide sequence, accompanying visuals, and logical transitions Delivery Before delivering the presentation When modifying deliver for different audiences Analyze audience demographics to suggest ideal tone/speech, narrative flow, emphasis, cues, etc. Feedback After delivering the presentation (post-presentation analysis phase) When making iterative refinements based on feedback Aggregate post-presentation audience feedback Identify areas of improvement and offer future recommendations

Slide 19

Slide 19 text

Data Visualization My Approach Curate relevant graphs, evaluate their effectiveness, and utilize Code Interpreter to enhance their aesthetic, clarity, and alignment with a specified goal audience Pros: Swift data processing from vast datasets lead to comprehensive, adaptive, and insightful visuals Cons: Risk of oversimplification, reliance on AI can risk missing nuanced insights, and there's a learning curve to ensure accurate representation of data. Creating: Producing customizable visualizations Evaluating: Assessing graph effectiveness and accuracy Understanding: Discerning and grasping graph patterns and implications Pros & Cons Taxonomy Key Takeaway: ChatGPT transforms complex datasets into clear insights, but despite its analyzing prowess, human expertise, with its nuanced understanding and contextual judgment, remains irreplaceable in data interpretation and communication
