With the developments and advance in tape technology, we ask whether these traditional disposal methods are entirely effective?

Slide 16

Slide 16 text

Degaussing ● Fantastic method to quickly destroy the tape data - when done correctly ● OE measurement needs to be double the strength of the tapes ● Older equipment was NSA approved, but are unlikely to have the strength to destroy modern tape ● They need regular servicing ● Degaussers output a lot of heat, causing them to cut-out and require a cool-off period. ● Heat in BaFe chemical structure causes stronger coercivity ● It’s impossible to know what force has hit the tape and whether it has been erased completely ● There is no way of measuring or testing the accuracy of the process ● Recommend that each tape is tested afterwards ● It doesn’t impact or erase the memory chip of modern tapes – Microwave frequency needed ● Anyone can use a plug

Slide 17

Slide 17 text

Shredding ● Doesn’t actually erase or remove the data from the tapes - it just breaks up the physical tape ● Time consuming process for small shred particles ● Noise pollution, loud operation for on-site usage ● Will always need to be paired with an additional tape disposal method ● Impossible to control all the particles of tape ● Tape remnants get caught in the shredding equipment ● Tape strands produced will include variations of cut size requested ● Creates microplastics ● Data can be recovered from the strands of tape

Information that we have extracted from a shredded heap of degaussed tape in under 5 seconds: ● Backup software used ● Company name ● Barcode Label number ● Partition details and information ● Drive serial number last used ● Server name ● Backup Pool information More than enough information to mount an attack on a company!

Incineration ● 800 degrees - good solution in achieving ‘nothingness’ ● Uncontrolled processes and lack of traceability ● Cold spots inside incinerators ● Commodity code issues – burning of incorrect mediums – lead to fines ● The business operations of a plant are not focused on protecting data ● Plastic quotas – increasing the time frames ● Environmental impact
