China’s 34 provinces have 4 different styles of
administration.
There are 22 “provinces” (省 sheng).
There are also 5 "Autonomous Regions" (自治区 zizhiqu)
characterized by a large number of non-Han Chinese.
There are also 4 "municipalities" or "province-level cities"
(直辖市 zhixiashi), Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing.
On top of this, there are 2 "Special Administrative Regions"
(特别行政区 tebiexingzhengqu) - Hong Kong and Macau
(for the rest of this quiz we will use the Chinese names of
Xianggang and Aomen).
Then there is Taiwan, whose status is heavily disputed. For
this quiz it is suffice to say that Taiwan is neither
independent nor is it administered by the Central
Government in Beijing.
We will divide the provinces into types for the quiz (don’t
worry, theres no need to remember how to pronounce the
different types).
