Week 1 Homework: Gather Supplies and Make a Space Cast Away, Tom Hanks https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/ We are living an unusual circumstance—and felt inspired by Tom Hanks in Cast Away (2000.)
In the film, a FedEx executive undergoes a physical and emotional transformation after crash landing on a deserted island. In this scene, he is opening the FedEx boxes that washed ashore and is trying to imagine how to survive on the island using remnants of his plane's cargo.

Due to the unexpected and unprecedented crisis we are forced to be, we decided that we would take a Cast Away pedagogical approach! Our principal rule is that we don’t want anyone to have to go out and buy any new supplies! We will all learn how to make some art out of nothing! Everyone’s first assignment is to make a space and gather supplies! Homework: Gather Supplies and Make a Space

Make a Space Find a space, a corner, a surface in your home you will claim yours, your new studio. It can be a room, a kitchen counter, a desk, the patio, or the floor of your garage. Goal Post two: Make a space, take a photo, and post it to the discussion thread. I took over Aubrey’s bedroom since she is currently in Miami. I set up a folding table, got my laptop setup in her desk, and feel I created a cockpit where I can focus and create. ANDY SHEILA I have a desk in the back room of my house. I like it because it is light and bright. I’ve got a bunch of windows, a ceiling fan, and a record player.

ANDY SHEILA Sketchbook Goal Post Three: Get one sketchbook—and some old prints or printed materials that you can cut up and collage with. These are some of my older sketchbooks here (the ones on the top) because they help me understand where I’ve been and give perspective on where I might go next. On the right, some old prints. Sketchbooks, color coded calendars, and proofs or monotypes that were short of successful. In my world—everything has a chance of a second life—a possibility of success. SHEILA

ANDY SHEILA Book, Books Goal Post Four: Upload photo of one book you are reading….or more! Here are some of mine. I’ve read a lot of them, but they are comforting, so I’ll find myself going back to them as a kind of self soothing. Some of these are old friends that I revisit from time to time. Some I had saved to read when I had the time! I am excited this is the time!

Make a Space Special Also let’s not down play the importance of music. We got a record player for Christmas and have been adding a number of new and older records to our collection. Here are a few that I’ve been playing heavily lately. I take advantage of my time in the studio to listen and learn from NPR and podcasts. In addition, I enjoy listening to alternative, electronic, jazz, classic, world music—and yes, Brazilian and Latin music! ANDY SHEILA
