Importance of Good Geography Accurate boundaries and addresses allow us to count your government’s residents in the correct location. An accurate count helps the federal government allocate $675 billion annually for programs and services— including education, housing, health care services for the elderly, job training, and transportation. 3

BAS Schedule and Deadlines Timeframe Activity Every January Invitation letter/e-mail sent to Highest Elected Official and BAS point of contact. Every March 1 Deadline to submit updates for all subsequent censuses, surveys, and estimates published for that year. Every May 31 Final deadline to submit updates for the following year’s BAS materials. 6

New Construction Program • Once a decade, voluntary opportunity for governments* to: o Submit addresses with city style mailing addresses for units constructed after LUCA that will be closed to the elements (i.e., basic construction completed) by census day. 13 * This applies to governments that will receive decennial census questionnaires by mail.

Importance of PSAP Participation • Statistical geography can help provide data. o For example, CDPs are used to create boundaries for a concentration of population where no legal boundaries exist. • Cities or communities without legal boundaries. • Neighborhoods. • State-recognized tribal areas. • Data for these statistical geographies are often used as criteria in grant applications or programs (e.g., Opportunity Zones Program). 17

2020 Census PSAP Schedule Timeframe Activity July 2018 Census Bureau sends official invitation letters/e-mails. January 2019 PSAP delineation phase begins. Participants had 120 calendar days to submit updates. January 2020 PSAP verification phase begins. Participants have 90 calendar days to review updates. April 1, 2021 2020 Statistical Areas become official 18

Participant Statistical Areas Program • 1,010 participating agencies representing 3,078 counties • 485 agencies submitted new plans covering 1,131 counties • 360 agencies representing 1,562 counties had no changes
