Thomas Pepin

Thomas Pepin, better known as Tom Pepin, is a Tampa Bay business leader and philanthropist whose influence spans education, healthcare, commerce, and public safety across the region for more than 4 decades—known for a steady approach to leadership and community support, as the former President and CEO of Pepin Distributing Company. Through both business and charitable efforts, he has worked to strengthen organizations and institutions that serve the people of Tampa Bay.

Throughout his career, Thomas viewed leadership as a responsibility that extends beyond company performance. Instead of focusing only on financial results, he emphasized the importance of long-term relationships and community involvement. This outlook shaped many of the decisions he made while guiding his company and supporting local initiatives.

Tom Pepin returned to Florida after graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont. After completing his studies, he joined the family business and began working at Pepin Distributing Company. In 1986, he purchased the company from his father and began leading its next stage of growth.

Under his leadership, the company expanded into one of Florida’s largest beverage distribution businesses. Over time, the organization grew into an enterprise valued at approximately $260 million and became an important distributor for major beverage manufacturers. The company developed a reputation for disciplined operations and dependable partnerships throughout the region.

Education has also been an important focus of his work. When several families approached him about students struggling in traditional school environments, Thomas's family helped support the creation of Pepin Academies. These public charter schools were designed to serve students with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD.

For more than twenty-five years, Pepin Academies have helped thousands of students through individualized education programs. The schools emphasize confidence, responsibility, and life skills while providing a structured learning environment for students who benefit from specialized support.

Healthcare is another area where he has contributed meaningful support. Through the Pepin Heart Institute, Tom helped fund cardiovascular research, patient care, and educational programs related to heart health. These initiatives work alongside medical institutions across the Tampa Bay region to raise awareness and improve the treatment of heart conditions. His efforts in healthcare philanthropy earned recognition as Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year.

Public safety has remained another important area of focus. Thomas has supported initiatives connected to the Tampa Police Department Chief's Foundation and other law enforcement programs. These efforts help provide resources for officer wellness, family assistance, and community engagement. His commitment to these programs earned him recognition as the Tampa Police Department Citizen of the Year and the twentieth Lightning Community Hero.

His work has received recognition from several public institutions. In 2017, he was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame. The Florida Senate has acknowledged his contributions to community service on multiple occasions. The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners also honored him for decades of civic involvement. In 2023, Temple Park was renamed to recognize the contributions of the Pepin family to the city.

Those who know him often describe him as steady, thoughtful, and loyal to the relationships he builds. His career reflects years of consistent effort rather than sudden recognition. Through business leadership, community support, and long-term investment in local institutions, Thomas Pepin has helped strengthen the Tampa Bay region, and his lasting influence continues to support the community today.
