Transcript

  1. Agenda • Platform overview • Interaction flow • tvOS •

Traditional Apps • Client-Server Apps • Platform limitations • Design features • Demo
  2. Platform overview • 64-bit dual-core A8 chip • 2GB RAM

    • 32GB or 64GB of storage • 1080p resolution • HDMI 1.42 • USB-C • Bluetooth 4.1 • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet
  3. What’s Focusable? • UIButton • UIControl • UISegmentedControl • UITabBar

    • UITextField • UISearchBar
UICollectionViewCell and UITableViewCell determined by delegate: • collectionView(_:canFocusItemAtIndexPath:) • tableView(_:canFocusRowAtIndexPath:)
  4. tvOS • tvOS is a modified version of iOS 9

    • In fact, many frameworks you have likely used are available in tvOS.
  5. Native apps • The process for creating apps for Apple

TV is similar to the process for creating iOS apps. Utilise familiar iOS frameworks and concepts you know like Storyboards, UIKit, and Auto Layout. • Fully customisable UI • New and existing apps can target both iOS and the new Apple TV, allowing for unprecedented multiplayer options.
  6. Client-Server apps TVML - Apple’s Television Markup Language. Provides a

set of pre- designed templates for creating layouts for pages. TVJS - JavaScript framework. Provides a set of APIs for creating client- server app. TVMLKit - Obj-C/Swift framework. Provides the bridge between your native code and the JavaScript code in your user interface. TV Services - Obj-C/Swift framework. Used to provide a tvOS with content of your app in a way that tvOS could display it to user.
  7. TVML template example Catalog page template <catalogTemplate> <banner> <title>Title</title> </banner>

    <list> <section> <listItemLockup> ... </listItemLockup> <listItemLockup> ... </listItemLockup> </section> </list> </catalogTemplate>
  8. Third-party developer apps are limited to 200MB. Platform limitations Moreover,

app can only access 500 KB of persistent storage that is local to the device (using the NSUserDefaults class)
  9. More limitations • No push notifications • No app badges

    • Certain frameworks like MultipeerConnectivity, WebView aren’t available • No customisable video player • Applications need to be submitted as Bitcode binaries
This includes embedded frameworks, which makes many third-party closed-source frameworks unusable in tvOS
  10. The good news • Can usually assume high-bandwidth, low- latency

networks • Screen size always the same (1080p) • Don’t have to worry about rotation, size class changes
  11. Take advantage of the Top Shelf Top shelf is a

way for you to show some content overview of your app
