9. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India 30 | Opening Film Rajan Khosa Rajan Khosa came into the limelight with his feature film ‘Dance Of The Wind’, which premiered at Venice and won at Rotterdam, Chicago, London, Nantes and other film festivals. His shorts include ‘Wisdom Tree’ and ‘Flower Girl’. An alumnus of Royal College of Arts, London, FTII, and NID, Ahmedabad, he is a voting member of BAFTA. Ali is charged with the responsibility of taking the sheep over mountain territory to new pastures that will keep the flock alive. Nargis must find a way to bring her mother back to her family which has been split by the fight between her father and uncle over the use of the meadow. Mohammad-Ali Talebi Mohammed-Ali Talebi is a writer, producer and director. He studied Film and TV direction in Tehran. He has written and directed many TV series, short films and documentaries, mostly for children. He has also directed several feature films including ‘You Are Free’ and ‘Bag of Rice’. They have snowball fights with the boys, race down steep hills on a sledge and are looking forward to Christmas. One day Naisha suddenly disappears. The refugee applications of Naisha and her mother have been rejected so if the police find them they will be sent back home. But nobody knows where Naisha and her mother have gone. The only clue is a secret address written in invisible ink. Julie and Mette get onto the night train to the big city to find Naisha before the police do. Christian Lo Christian Lo graduated with a B.A in film and video production from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College, England in 2001. His shorts for children, ‘Iver’ and ‘Punctured’, have been screened at numerous film festivals winning many awards. ‘Rafiki’ is his debut feature film. Age Group: Above 10 years

Kamal, an Arab Boy, lives in Jerusalem with his mother, sisters and a very strict grandfather. He and his grandfather have to support the family because they have no father. The day after his arrival, David comes to the Old City and accidentally meets Kamal in the worst possible way. However, a friendship gradually develops between them. Age Group: Above 13 years Kikuo Kawasaki Kikuo Kawasaki established himself as a TV commercial director in New York after working as editor on ‘Game’, the multi-screen U.S. entry to the 1967 Montreal Expo. From 1974 to 1979, he directed a number of Japanese commercials. He has also directed the films ‘Lured Innocence’ and ‘Private Passions’.

The two of them begin a search for Luuk’s father, which leads them to strongman “Powerhouse René,” who agrees to coach Luuk in weight training. As Luuk builds his confidence and discovers more secrets about his family’s past, he comes to realize that strength comes in many different forms. His final exam films ‘Lucky Strike’ and ‘Ralentir’ won the Grolsch Film prize in 1992. Mark de Cloe was nominated Most Promising Young European Director at the Rome Film Fest, 2006.

This year, his kid sister Sophie joins him. But it’s not fun to be stuck with a little sister, so he does what he can to avoid her. He succeeds in a way he can never imagine. Sophie is kidnapped by a giant, 1000 year-old bear. Now, Jonathan has to venture into the heart of the forest to confront the strange beings that dwell there and rescue his sister. Age Group: Above 6 years Esben Toft Jacobsen Esben Toft Jacobsen studied visual communication at The Danish Design School and animation from the National Film School of Denmark. He has worked as a freelance artist and animator on a number of computer games before joining Copenhagen Bombay. He has also participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus, 2008.

Their relationship dramatically changes during this inevitable trip where the two must work together to sell a van. Their journey takes them through various towns. As they travel, they learn about each other and eventually create a strong father- son bond. Age Group: Above 10 years Mehdi Rahmani Mehdi Rahmani is a filmmaking graduate from the IRIB University, Tehran. He has made many shorts and documentary films. He is also a photographer and has made several photographic collections. ‘The Other’ is his first feature film.

It hatches a fledgling that belongs to no known species of chicken, duck or goose in the coop. All the poultry in the yard think it is ugly. Rejected by its surrogate ‘parents’, the chick is ridiculed and pushed around by the other birds and ‘siblings’ despite saving the coop from a fox. Utterly miserable, the little outcaste courageously decides to make it on his own in the dangerous world outside. Age Group: Above 6 years Garri Bardin Garri Bardin is a celebrated Russian animation director, screenwriter, producer and director. He worked with the Russian animation studio Soyuzmultfilm, and in 1991 founded his own studio, Stayer, which has produced many animations that won top awards at international film festivals. ‘The Ugly Duckling’ is his first feature film.

His charming but clumsy father Koos takes magic lessons with him and in no time the “Stikker & Son Magic Show” is on. During a performance, Ben’s friend and assistant Sylvie vanishes in their magic trick. Everyone holds Koos responsible. Now not only does Ben have to find Sylvie, but he must also save his parents’ marriage and keep his father out of the hands of the press and the police. Age Group: Above 10 years Joram Lürsen Joram Lürsen has directed several successful films and TV series. His 2007 film ‘Love is All’ became one of the highest grossing Danish films of all time. His TV series include ‘All Stars’, ‘Vuurze’ and ‘Baantjer’. He has also made many TV films.

Suddenly a little creature falls from the sky. It looks like a baby girl but has wings instead of arms. Warre takes the creature home and shows it to his wife Tine, who wants a baby. Tine decides to keep the creature and calls it Birdie. Tine does her very best to raise Birdie as a normal little girl. But Birdie is not a normal little girl and one day she flies away to the South. Tine is inconsolable and together with Warre she goes looking for Birdie. Age Group: Above 10 years

Soon after arriving, Simon loses his beloved soccer ball. Attempting to find it, he gets lost in the biggest city-slum in Africa. With his trendy shoes and fancy clothes he clearly stands out but, after he gets mugged he looks like any other African boy. When Simon’s mother goes to the media for help, Simon is suddenly a hunted boy in the alleyways of the slum—he now needs all the help he can get from his new friends. Age Group: Above 13 years Vibeke Muasya Vibeke Muasya is a writer, director, dancer and choreographer. She has written and directed several award-winning documentaries and short films. Her short film ‘Birds of Passage’ (2001) received a Prix Europa nomination and was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination and ‘Tulip Night’ (1999) won the Silver Award at Rotterdam. ‘Lost in Africa’ is her debut feature film.

125. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India 146 | On Children’s World In human history, some of the greatest and gravest works of art have surprisingly been reserved for children. In writing one can give the example of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Gulliver’s Travels’: where fantastical characters and plots enjoyed by children as bedtime stories, are layered with allegories and metaphors that cleverly comment on the society that governs us. This makes these works of art eternal and universal. Cinema has its own gems reserved for children. Charlie Chaplin’s works are a case in point. In India one such comedy made for children, a deceptively simple story that hides one of the darkest commentaries on society is Shyam Benegal’s 1975 film, ‘Charandas Chor’. Shyam Benegal’s body of work is always political, where he tackles issues like societal injustice, structural violence and religious intolerance with a rare intellectual vigour. So when Benegal makes a ‘children’s film’, he retains his inimitable lens but drapes it in a delightful form that is accessible and engaging for all ages. ‘Charandas Chor’ is a story of a professional thief who has vowed to never lie. Along with his dishonest sidekick Buddhu, who he is constantly trying to reform, he sustains a successful career as an ‘honest thief’. In the course of his profession, he encounters many respectable members of society— rulers and artists, businessmen and holy men, each of whom ironically pale before his honesty. In a society where nothing is what seems to be, and people hide behind masks, Charandas becomes an emblem for truth, integrity, justice and thus life itself that must persist and resist. While most films aimed at children are conscious of giving out a clear message on what is right and wrong, ‘Charandas Chor’ challenges its young viewers to look beyond the obvious and judge what is true and what’s false for themselves. Based on a Rajasthani folk tale, Charandas with its Chaplinesque humor, slapstick comedy, bizarre characters, hidden parodies is at once a farce and a fable. Just picture the disarming one-tooth-less smile of Charandas, the constant wailing of his partner Buddhu and the three skinny policemen in their oversized half pants chasing the clever duo in every alternate reel. It has remained one of the best films for children ever produced in the country, raising giggles and laughter every time it is played, even today. Govind Nihalani, who would later become another torchbearer of independent filmmaking, helmed its cinematography. The film was shot in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), with rural actors from Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theatre group. Only two actors were brought in from Bombay – one of whom was Smita Patil who would later become the poster girl for Art-house cinema. ‘Charandas Chor’ was her debut film. Interestingly actor Shabana Azmi and director Kalpana Lajmi assisted Benegal in this film. It is also perhaps the coming together of so many talented and imaginative artists that makes ‘Charandas Chor’ a masterpiece, albeit an unrecognized, unsung one, so far. It is time to alleviate this masterpiece and put it amidst the pantheons of the greats of world cinema where it rightfully belongs. From Chhattisgarh To Chaplin For Children’s Cinema Shyam Benegal The Birth Of Charandas Chor Soon after making ‘Ankur’ I was looking for a subject to make a children’s film. At that time Shama Zaidi asked me to look at stories written by Vijaydan Detha who was a great collector and re-teller of folk stories mostly from Rajasthan. One of them was a story about an honest thief. It is a lovely story. When I read it I instantly agreed. About the same time Habib Tanvir was doing a play, but he was doing it as a tragedy of an honest thief. But I said I want to do it as a comedy, not a tragedy. To approach it in a different way I decided to use village actors. He agreed and both Shama and Habib came out with a wonderful script. Actors And Their Chaplinesque Humour: The acting style of Nacha actors was unique and extraordinary. Habib had gathered over 30 Nacha groups from Chhattisgarh and we had a huge workshop in Raipur with them. We chose our actors from there. Few of them I brought to Bombay with me. For an entire week they did nothing but watch the films of great silent comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy. This comedy suited the mime style of Nacha actors. They enjoyed the films and adapted them on their own leading to a very original style of physical comedy that you see in the film. My two lead actors, Laluram and Madanlal carried off the film beautifully. They were simply marvellous. They were the best actors Habib had. Interestingly, in Habib’s play, both their roles are reversed. Shooting: With the script and trained actors, we went back to Chhattisgarh. During the shoot we did a lot of improvisation and made the film for CFSI. We were constantly working to do different things and tricks in the film that kids might enjoy, e.g. in one part we showed the film burning because of heat to fool the viewers into thinking that the film had ended, when it had not. I remember that it fooled the projectionists as well and we had to tell them that this was how it was intended and that the film continues. Charandas Chor As A Parable: All folk stories are fables or parables. While making the film we wanted to keep it that way. Since it is a children’s film we wanted to demarcate the ideas of right and wrong. Yet, ‘Charandas Chor’ went beyond and challenged kids to question what is real and what is not, what is false and what is not. That I think makes it unique and different. (As told to Satyen K. 127. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India 148 | On Children’s World Fear, fantasy and dilemmas of the kind that could only happen in childhood, inhabit the films made by children whose creations have made their way to the competition category of the Little Directors section of the 17th ICFFI. ‘Tellu’ is a boy who applies a lot of oil on his head. A group of bullies at school tease him about the oil in his hair. When the bullying becomes too much to bear, he decides to join the gang. He starts ignoring his best friend and so runs the synopsis of this short film by 9th and 10th grade students of a Mumbai based school. Cut to a 13-year old Delhi based student who has sent in a film where ‘Fancock and his friend Trinity are sent to Planet Earth to save it from the Evil Olympus. One day as Trinity is in school, the evil spirits arrive...’ Running through the shooting and editing formats of some of these films, made by middle and senior school students from around the country, it becomes amply evident that cinema is not a remote technology and equipment heavy medium that is reserved for film makers to approach only post film school, any more. A simple handycam (at a pinch even a mobile phone) for recording and a story on hand and you are on your way. Well, add to that a computer with basic editing software like Movie Maker and there is no reason why you can’t be making films at the rate of one a week! A quick google search reveals that the trend of children making cinema is a burgeoning one worldwide. There are in fact websites that have classified films made by children genre wise; ‘horror’ being a particular favourite. Some brackish green liquid, ketchup, powders that can make liquid fizz up and a story to stitch it all up together and yes the children seem ready to roll. Screen-Play! Why Should Children Make Films... “Applying oil on his hair gets a child bullied to the extent where he has no choice but to join a gang of bullies himself.” “Evil spirits attack from another planet on a regular school day” “A superhero turns turtle quite literally when he lands on the ground.”
128. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India On Children’s World | 149 There are other sites that carry simple step by step instructions on how to shoot and edit an animation film. And then of course there are several international film festivals now which accept films made by children in special categories. But why make films at all? How ‘educative’ is this process? With the convergence of media, where footage from a handycam or mobile phone can be downloaded into a personal computer or laptop, the ‘how’ of the process is entirely within the reach of most children. With some help from an adult, the child can figure out software like Movie Maker (children often perform more complex operations while playing digital games) and that takes care of the ‘how ‘ of some very basic film making processes. ‘Initially I thought film making was a complicated process but when we made the film I basically discovered how easy it could be’ says 12-year old Siya Chandrie, one of the Little Directors whose film will be screened at the ICFFI this year. Now, the all important question of ‘what’ is it that children can do with this medium. Well, they could treat it the way they treat brush, paints, crayons, canvas or paper. They could use it to create their own art, tell their own unique stories, be individual in their expression, play with the medium and create something that they can call entirely their own. Or like with a lot of art they could be driven by agendas with a ‘message’ that the film must carry or reflect some ideology which is often driven or at least planted by adults. I for one, am a staunch believer in the former category. With some facilitation by adults children can entirely conceptualize, script and shoot their own films where they take complete ownership of the content. Freed from adult judgements on how their film is ‘silly’ or ‘(they need to) make something more meaningful’, children can actually come up with the most effervescent themes that reflect true expression. Cinema is a particularly potent tool for creation and expression as various media converge and make the ‘how’ of film making an almost irrelevant question. How children apply themselves to the process, how they create their stories, how they explore various mechanical ways to create ‘effects’ and how they wrap these discoveries around their stories could potentially be their single most creative encounter with technology. What’s more, they can even drum up an audience for their films thanks to Youtube and other free streaming video services. Finally, pasting the film on social networking sites can even get the film some eyeballs. 129. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India 150 | On Children’s World Chinese children’s film has its own unique art style, which is an important part of Chinese films. It has always been a priority during the early days of the Chinese film industry and exerted a profound influence on Chinese film history. During the silent film period, Shanghai Mingxing Film Company produced the first Chinese children feature film; ‘An Orphan Rescues His Grandpa’ in 1923. Before the foundation of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, there were only 23 children’s films produced in total. The government of PRC encouraged filmmakers to create more films for children audiences and also invested to that end, every year, which paved the way for the growth and demand of children’s films in China. It was on International Children’s Day, 1981, when the China Children’s Film Studio was established to specialize in producing children’s films. The number of children’s films increased to ten per year during the eighties and nineties. From 1949 to 2000, there were a total of 293 children’s films made. With the economic reform of the Chinese film industry in 2002, the producing and distributing of children’s films have been marketed and the government welcomed non-governmental film companies to produce children’s films. The amount of children’s films have increased to 50 per year since 2007; however, only ten percent of children’s films have the opportunity to be screened in commercial cinemas, and only a few of them could make a profit at the box office. Other films were screened at campuses or on TV and recovered their costs with the support of the government and general population. The government selects more than 30 films every year and invests 50 thousand dollars in each film to support its production. According to the number of screenings in the campus, 20 films will be subsidized by the government. The national film award has also set up a specialist award and prize money for quality children’s films. Founded in 1984, China Children’s Film Association (CCFA) is a national academic community under the leadership of the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT). More than 200 members of CCFA are composed of children film directors, screenwriters, performers, producers, distributors, critics and education experts. The renowned performing artist, Ms. Yu Lan, and the famous female photographer, Ms. Chen Jinti, both are honorary chairpersons of CCFA, while the professor of Beijing Film Academy, Mr. Hou Keming PhD, is the current chairperson. The goal of CCFA is to improve the quality of children’s films, offer children audiences access to films, assist with marketing and promote international exchange. 130. 17th International Children’s Film Festival India On Children’s World | 151 The China International Children’s Film Festival (CICFF) is an international biennial film event that is approved by the State Council and put on record by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is hosted by SARFT and organized by CCFA. It has been successfully held for eleven sessions since 1989. The aim of the festival is to build an international exchange platform for screening and watching excellent children’s films from all around the world, which will enhance the international communication and cooperation, and promote the development of children’s films. Furthermore, the festival will provide Chinese children an opportunity to watch more outstanding films from home and abroad, which will widen their view and increase their knowledge. In the Chinese Retrospective, the audience will watch different genres of Chinese children’s films produced in the last ten years; two ethnic minority films are included. China is a unified multi-ethnic country, with 56 ethnic groups in all. After 1949, the government encouraged the culture of every ethnic minority to be shown in films, children’s films included. The films will help children know about other ethnic minority peers’ life and would develop the concept of ethnic solidarity. About 30 ethnic minority children’s films have been produced in China until 2010. Children’s Film Society India (CFSI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that was established in 1955 to create and nurture a dynamic children’s film culture in the country. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s First Prime Minister took personal interest and instituted CFSI soon after India’s independence with the hope that indigenous and exclusive cinema for children would stimulate their creativity, compassion and critical thinking. Since then CFSI has produced, exhibited and distributed films, serials, animations and documentaries – that entertain and encourage children to reflect upon the world around them. Over the years some of the brightest talents of Indian Cinema – Kedar Sharma, Mrinal Sen, K. Abbas, Shyam Benegal, Satyen Bose, Tapan Sinha, Zul Vellani, M.S. Sathyu, Sai Paranjpye, A.K Bir, Budhadeb Dasgupta, Ram Mohan, Santosh Sivan and Pankaj Advani to name a few – have directed films for us. They are joined by many other new and imaginative film makers who have created some of the most delightful children’s content in the country. With an enviable catalogue of over 250 films in 15 different languages, CFSI remains the prime producer of children’s films in the country. Several of these films have won prestigious national and international awards.
