4 Special Education Director’s Scratch Pad From the Desk of Mina M. Hutchins, Director II Friday, March 2, 2012 Special Education Teacher Gathering The Special Education Teachers met at SIAC February 29, 2012. Thank you to the 85 Special Educators who attended. We reviewed some of our compliance findings, reconnected with “why we do this work”, and charted concerns about our department. The teachers who charted their concerns found the following issues to be of great concern: 1) Shortage of Psychologist 2) 5 hour limit for paras 3) Need to train paraprofessionals in academic areas and behavior 4) Money for classroom supplies and materials 5) Time to complete IEPs 6) More SEIS training 6) Appropriate placement of students not based on space 7) Too many grade levels in SDC 8) Making room in master schedule for mainstreaming in 2012-2013. Parent Outreach CAC: Community Advisory Committee- advises and makes recommendations to the SELPA for possible inclusion in the Local Plan. Each SELPA has a Local Plan describing how it will provide special education services. Who is the CAC? Parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators work together to form the CAC – everyone is encouraged to participate. What is the purpose of the CAC? In addition to advising the SELPA, the CAC provides informative workshops and assists parents in understanding special education and the needs of their children. When does the CAC meet? The CAC has five meetings per year. The remaining meetings this year are: March 22, 2012 – CVUSD and May 10, 2012 – CVUSD. Seana Condit-Gordon is our HUSD parent representative [email protected]. The CAC also hosts the yearly Excellence in Education Awards. The nomination forms are attached. Please circulate and give a copy to parents of students with special needs. Parents may nominate any staff member that has gone above and beyond to support a parent or child with special needs. The completed nomination forms are due by March 23, 2012. The Excellence in Education Awards Ceremony will be April 26, 2012 in Castro Valley. Parent Network Meeting: Next Meeting is March 20th.
