Face of Climate

Face of Climate

Today is Earth Day! Over one billion people in 192 countries are participating from London to Sao Paolo, Seoul to Babylon City, New Delhi to New York, Rome to Cairo; people everywhere are taking action in their communities and helping depict The Face of Climate Change. 1. # FACE OF CHANGE

    View Slide

  2. The world is DYING!

    View Slide

  3. BECAUSE OF YOU!

    View Slide

  4. YOU are a part of the PROBLEM!

    View Slide

  5. With over 7 BILLION PEOPLE

    View Slide

  6. and... 8.7 BILLION kinds of ANIMAL species.

    View Slide

  7. 29 PERCENT land

    View Slide

  8. and... 71 PERCENT water

    View Slide

  9. PLANET EARTH is the place we call home.

    View Slide

  10. A place that is literally ONE of a kind

    View Slide

  11. with life found nowhere else in the UNIVERSE!

    View Slide

  12. yet, we have a CRISIS on our hands.

    View Slide

  13. INCREASE in natural disasters and extreme
    weather is...

    View Slide

  14. effecting REAL PEOPLE, ANIMALS, and the
    ENVIRONMENT!

    View Slide

  15. Climate change is not just an ENVIRONMENTAL
    PROBLEM,

    View Slide

  16. it is a DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEM.

    View Slide

  17. Coming from the
    DEVELOPMENT of todays
    rich countries

    View Slide

  18. INCREASE in carbon dioxide and
    green house gasses

    View Slide

  19. from the use of COAL, in our
    industries and factories.

    View Slide

  20. ELECTRICITY

    View Slide

  21. and GASOLINE

    View Slide

  22. are INCREASING the temperature of our planet.

    View Slide

  23. These GREEN HOUSE GASES keep
    the heat from escaping the
    atmosphere

    View Slide

  24. Too much of it is causing NEGATIVE effects
    on the environment

    View Slide

  25. And yes, even our CARS are adding to the
    crisis.

    View Slide

  26. In the past 100 years, the total
    temperature has increased by 1.1
    DEGREES.

    View Slide

  27. Doesn’t seem like much, but the little
    change in heat is...

    View Slide

  28. change the glaciers to MELT;

    View Slide

  29. INCREASING our sea level by 0.14 inches per year.

    View Slide

  30. still not CONVINCED?

    View Slide

  31. Tell that to this polar bear who could not get
back to land due to the MELTING ICE!

    View Slide

  32. Because of the HEAT, precipitation patterns have also
    changed;

    View Slide

  33. causing more RAINFALL.

    View Slide

  34. In turn, FLOODS have been occurring more
    FREQUENTLY.

    View Slide

  35. COASTAL CITIES are more likely to flood,

    View Slide

  36. and in less than 50 YEARS, some coastal cities
    will be UNDERWATER...

    View Slide

  37. meaning more FLOODS to come.

    View Slide

  38. Also, the heat is INCREASING the EVAPORATION
    CYCLE

    View Slide

  39. leading to WITHERING CROPS

    View Slide

  40. and more fires due to DRYNESS.

    View Slide

  41. PEOPLE who are being effected the most...

    View Slide

  42. are NOT those adding the most to the Carbon
    Dioxide emission.

    View Slide

  43. It is Affecting those living in undeveloped
    countries

    View Slide

  44. Killer diarrheal diseases, malnutrition,
    malaria, and dengue...

    View Slide

  45. are highly CLIMATE-SENSITIVE and are
expected to WORSEN as the climate
    changes.

    View Slide

  46. Areas with WEAK HEALTH infrastructure
are the LEAST able to cope and respond.

    View Slide

  47. When natural disasters strike, their ability to
grow crops, access water, and feed themselves
    WORSENS.

    View Slide

  48. CHILDREN in these areas have an even
    harder time to survive.

    View Slide

  49. Due to the change in their environment,
many ANIMALS are being IMPACTED too.

    View Slide

  50. Animals like CORAL REEFS are experiencing
    the worst of it.

    View Slide

  51. Coral can only survive 77 DEGREES to 84 DEGREES

    View Slide

  52. But because of the heat, 25 PERCENT of the worlds
    coral reefs have DIED!

    View Slide

  53. In the Indian OCEAN, 90 PERCENT DIED
    due to WARMER WATERS.

    View Slide

  54. Why does this even matter?

    View Slide

  55. Coral reefs actually SUSTAIN underwater life
and it prevents waves from hitting the coast

    View Slide

  56. According to scientists, coral reefs nurture up to
a MILLION SPECIES of marine life.

    View Slide

  57. Without them, our ECO SYSTEM WILL FAIL.

    View Slide

  58. How do we RESPOND?

    View Slide

  59. Unless green house gases DECREASE DRASTICALLY,

    View Slide

  60. MANY will still be impacted.

    View Slide

  61. You are also part of the SOLUTION!

    View Slide

  62. We can make a DIFFERENCE by...

    View Slide

  63. DECREASING your energy use and
    investing in ALTERNATIVE ENERGY.

    View Slide

  64. If every U.S household REPLACED ONE
regular incandescent light bulb with a
    compact fluorescent light bulb,

    View Slide

  65. it would PREVENT the equivalent of 90
BILLION POUNDS of green house gas
    emissions from power plants.

    View Slide

  66. That is like taking out 7.5 MILLION
    cars off the road!

    View Slide

  67. Change to SOLAR PANELS, which uses
    the suns energy for power.

    View Slide

  68. That can save up to 1,300,000 Pounds of
    greenhouse gas emissions.

    View Slide

  69. Though it is switched off, appliances
continue to use small amounts of energy
    called PHANTOM ENERGY.

    View Slide

  70. Use POWER STRIPS that you
can turn off home appliances that
    are not in use.

    View Slide

  71. ONE power strip can reduce greenhouse gas by
    500 POUNDS a year.

    View Slide

  72. Setting your thermostat just 2 DEGREES
lower in winter and higher in summer could
save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide
    each year.

    View Slide

  73. RECYCLE as much as you can.

    View Slide

  74. By recycling half of your household waste,
you can save 2,400 POUNDS of carbon
    dioxide annually.

    View Slide

  75. Lastly, use ALTERNATIVE means of TRAVEL...

    View Slide

  76. WALK

    View Slide

  77. BIKE

    View Slide

  78. and use PUBLIC TRANSIT.

    View Slide

  79. Every gallon of gasoline you saved is 20
    POUNDS less carbon dioxide released.

    View Slide

  80. Imagine what could happen if EVERYONE
    conserved energy.

    View Slide

  81. Every little thing makes a difference.

    View Slide

  82. WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD!
