2. Beddington Park The park is said to be one of the most rich, historical and archaeological sites in south west London with evidence of settlements dating back to the late Bronze Age. The discovery of a Roman Stone Coffin in 1930 lends weight to suspicions that a grand Roman villa and bath-house once stood to the north side of the park. Address: Church Road, Wallington, Sutton, SM6 7NN Carshalton Park There were deer in this park up until 1898. Plans in the early 18th century to build a new mansion, or palace, in the park involved the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni who was chosen to design the building and carry out landscaping. Only the Orangery was built, although architectural drawings for the mansion were published. The gates made for the park in 1711 are now installed on the Gold Coast of Long Island at the site of a former estate which was turned into a public park, the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, New York. 3. The parks present landscape has its roots in the early 17th Century, when the area is shown on a private estate survey c.1620, called the 'Arundel Map'. The Mill is of considerable antiquity, it has mention in Carshalton's entry into the Domesday Book which means that it has been a working mill site since the middle ages. The park was formed from the grounds of 4 large suburban properties situated along Carshalton Road and Manor Park Road. The largest house, situated on Manor Park Road, was called Manor Park House and is where the park got its name from. Sutton Urban District Council procured Manor Park House and it grounds in 1914. N O N S U C H P A R K King Henry VIII began to build Nonsuch Palace on 22 April 1538, the thirtieth anniversary of his accession, to provide a hunting lodge as part of his newly created hunting estate for Hampton Court. The King's advisors chose a site then occupied by the village of Cuddington, with its church and manor house. These were cleared away and the owners compensated. Within two months of work beginning, the name 'Nonsuch' first appears in the building accounts. The structure was perhaps substantially complete by January 1541. Only small remnants of the Palace can be seen today. 5. Lavender Fields Another type of open public spaces, besides parks, Sutton is famous for are the lavender fields. There are two historic ones in the borough. One, at Oaks Way, Carshalton Beeches is a not-for-profit community project that manages three acres of lavender. The other, a 25-acre commercial site in Croydon Lane called Mayfield, is popular with tourists. This area was once famous as the "Lavender Capital of the World". From the 18th to the early 20th centuries the North Downs of Surrey, with its chalky free-draining soil, ideal for lavender growing, were at the centre of worldwide production of lavender. It was a very prosperous part of the local agriculture. Blue fields could be seen all over Mitcham, Croydon, Wallington, Banstead, Carshalton and Sutton.
