Transcript

  1. Coding the next generation of software localisation Developing XLIFF-based FOSS

localisation tools for increased inter-operability, better collaboration and data freedom Ryan Northey Translate House
  2. Pootle and TranslateToolKit • Few (Open Source) localisation tools •

TTK parsers/convertors still used by many other projects • Pootle was built on top of PO format • Designed to work with local filesystem: – FS-bound rather than data-bound
  3. Localisation 2.0 • Diversification of localisation formats • Increased use

of: – Distributed versioning systems – Continuous integration • Cloud-based services
  4. XLIFF 1.2/2.0 • Extensible Localisation Interchange File Format • Open

Standard for localisation • Extensible – recognised extensions • XML pros/cons • Spec does not provide many core localisation features – defined through extensions
  5. 1 format to store them all • XLIFF can store/transmit

other formats/dialects • Store/transmit much richer dataset – Eg version history, attribution etc • App-specific data can be exported/imported
  6. Our goals • Support open localisation formats • Lossless export/import

of Pootle data • Lossless import/export of other localisation formats
  7. PyLIFF • Pythonic representation of XLIFF files – https://github.com/translate/pyliff •

Early stage of development • Future goals: – Manipulate/write files – Handling large files/streams
  8. TTK & XLIFF • Use XLIFF as “pivot” for converting

between formats • Make use of XSLT for other XML-based formats/dialects • Create XLIFF abstractions of other formats: – PoLIFF – PropsLIFF
  9. Pootle & XLIFF • PootleLIFF compatibility with existing data •

Make less FS-bound – Integration with VCS/external file storage • XLIFF based schema • Export full data – eg revision history • Publish extensions...
