  3. MPA Database: Overview •  Database currently lists 1801 MPAs in

    the Philippines MPA data obtained through various agencies, partners, and key persons.
  4. MPA Database: Overview Less MPAs (273) were established over the

    last decade. (713 in 1995-2005) Recent established MPAs favor larger (>10 ha) area
  5. MPAs in the Philippines 63 of 66 coastal/island provinces have

    at least one recorded MPA No Record •  Lanao Del Sur •  Pampanga •  Sulu
  6. MPAs in the Philippines By MPA Count •  Bohol (244)

    •  Cebu (149) •  Leyte (97) •  Palawan (83) •  Batangas (72) By Total Area •  Palawan (546,288 ha; ~39% ) •  Tawi Tawi (250,904 ha; ~18%) •  Batanes (193,403 ha) •  Surigao del Norte (90,518 ha) •  Isabela (71,651 ha) 1,068 MPAs (59.3 %) have total area of less than 100 hectares.

  10. MEAT Evaluations: Scoring Most of MEAT evaluations received satisfy the

    minimum score requirement for Levels 3 and 4 … Score > 63: 145 (32 %) Score > 47: 284 (61 %) Half of the MPAs score at least 53 pts
  11. MEAT Evaluations: Levels … but most of the MPAs are

    evaluated as Level 0 or 1. Level 3: 59 (13 %) Level 4: 13 (2.8 %) Average MPA management level is 1.1006
  12. MEAT Evaluations •  MPAs are evaluated to have high management

    score, but fail to satisfy important management aspect. –  e.g. (left, from 2013) MPA failed to adopt their drafted management plan (Level 1 threshold question)

    satisfied, preventing the MPA to reach the next effectiveness level
