Javascript is not something new in the world of WordPress. We have been already using it to add interactivity to themes and plugins via jQuery majorly. Many have been already using various frameworks for creating rich interfaces for plugins or using decoupled WordPress with Javascript heavy frontend. With the introduction of the block editor (Gutenberg) now we are talking and adopting modern javascript and moving beyond jQuery.
