  1. Lacking Motivation to Learn The source of sophomore slump and

general stress in undergraduate life. Cindy Chang Stanford University [email protected] @cindyjchang
  2. Increasing Motivation Without Technology  Find support • Study group

of friends, talk to professors, etc.  Just begin: stop hesitating before doing task  Set goals, find incentives, cross things off checklist  Break the routine: • Reengage yourself in activities, try new things • Exercise  Find balance between work and life  For teachers: • Show students relevance of material to their majors • Give students more control over their learning • Give helpful and frequent feedback bit.ly/HrlX1d, bit.ly/Hrv8y6, http://bit.ly/crP18F, http://bit.ly/f4CzzW, http://bit.ly/Hz6ae6, http://bit.ly/HrvftE, http://bit.ly/iOCSLU
  3. How Might Technology Help?  Better understanding of material through

varied approaches to teaching and learning  Interactive games, puzzles, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts  Multimedia content: videos, podcasts, etc.  Ease of sharing interesting & relevant content and creating community/interaction among students  Collaborative blogging and wikis  Opportunities to increase focus  Stayfocusd: add-on that blocks distracting sites  Chrome Time Track: time how long spend on tasks http://bit.ly/I2dsxh, http://bit.ly/I4BJ4h, http://bit.ly/I8My1W, http://bit.ly/fwi6tL, http://bit.ly/eWlALp
  4. Insights from College Sophomores  Stress in other areas of

life (work, sleep, relationships) may stem from non-interest and lack of motivation in learning:  Too many hard/not immediately relevant classes that you have to take  Dread studying/learning so you procrastinate  Takes you longer to do work because you’re not focused, poor time management  Sleep deprivation, lack of social life, unhappiness, and ineffective studying/learning.  Fail exams because you never learned the material or cared. Get bad grades, no positive reinforcement. Lowers self-esteem & outlook on life.  Stress about grad/med school possibilities, jobs, internships, future, etc.  Calming techniques:  Exercise, browsing/thinking about unrelated things, hobbies, music, taking a walk, being outside  Talking it out!
  5. Further Food for Thought  How might we change one’s

negative attitude toward something into a positive one?  How do we quiet hesitation and begin a task we know will be arduous and difficult?  How do we satisfy temptations to procrastinate?  In the face of failing and constantly getting demoralizing feedback, how do we maintain self-esteem and drive?  App possibilities:  Maintaining focus, starting a task, keeping perspective, encouraging novelty, find happiness in something daily
