  7. Sample Label Copy Richard Warren Sears and Alvah C. Roebuck

Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalog, 1897 Paper, 786 pages, 10.8 x 8.5 x 1.4 inches, 3.4 pounds ! In the 1880s, Richard Warren Sears, a railroad station agent from Minnesota, started a booming business with Alvah C. Roebuck selling a wide selection of priced products through mail order catalogues. However, as the catalogue became more popular and common in every household, Americans soon found another use for it, as daily news journals, book pages, and personal letters were now widespread alternatives to older wiping technologies. Championed by rural dwellers, the Sears and Roebuck catalogue quickly became America’s favorite outhouse attendant and euphemism for toilet paper, even earning the humorous nickname, “Rears and Sorebutt catalogue.”
  8. Sample Label Copy Joseph Gayetty Medicated Paper (Original Commercial Toilet

Paper), 1857 Manila hemp paper, aloe ! An American inventor born in Massachusetts, Joseph Gayetty invented commercial toilet paper on December 8, 1857, in New York City. Containing aloe as a lubricant, Gayetty’s toilet paper was originally marketed as an anti- hemorrhoid medical product. Each sheet of pure Manila hemp paper was watermarked “J C Gayetty N Y” and sold in a 500-sheet package for 50 cents. Although Gayetty was attacked as a counterfeit by at least one medical society at the time, advertisements called his product “The Greatest Necessity of the Age,” warning against the perils of using toxic-inked papers on sensitive body parts.
