  2. The School: We're training highly motivated, smart individuals to be

entry level Web Developers, who’ll be productive on day 1. Over the course of 16 full-time immersive weeks, we teach best practices in Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, Object-Oriented Design, Git, SQL, and Test-Driven Development Our focus is on students understanding the fundamentals of programming, deploying code every day, writing and contributing to the community, and team-based workflow. By the end of the program, they'll have over 700 hours of hands-on experience. OUR M.O. 3. Someday in 1995, Avi dialed into the internet for the

first time. Though he was only 12, he instantly knew that the web was the future. Immediately, he started teaching himself to program and hasn’t stopped since. His career began at 16 when he worked for an NYC startup, cityfeet.com. At 20, he was the CTO of a hedgefund. Then he started a site called designerpages.com. He also organizes one of the largest Rails meetups in the world, NYC on Rails. Over the past two years, he’s taught Ruby to over 300 people via Skillshare, at General Assembly, where he wrote the “Intro to Web Development” curriculum. He started The Flatiron School to share his passion for code with people who are dedicated to honing long term careers as great developers. “Avi is one of the rare people who not only understands Rails in and out, but also explains the concept in an illustrative way. He takes you step by step from an atomic level to a finished product...by far the best teacher I’ve ever had.” Avi Flombaum: LEad Instructor “Great class. I highly recommend it — the best money I’ve ever spent. Seriously. I started out with no programming experience except a tiny bit of HTML and can now confidently write rich internet applications.” Arel English - Former STudenT Statement Igor Lebovic - Former STudenT FlatironSchool DevelopingProfessionals Instruction Street cred The Students Science FAir Curriculum The Teachers our objectives Becoming a Pro This Semester And Jobs An Introduction The school

  5. Curriculum: Technical Easily the most beautiful programming language ever. Students

are immersed in Ruby and use it in a variety of contexts. The Ruby Language Rails Databases RubyMotion HTML: ERB & HAML Css: SCSS & LESS JavasCript SysOPS Git APIS The number one web framework in use by Ninjas, Rockstars, and Hackers. Seriously, it makes web development a productive pleasure. While the web is definitely the platform, we love native iOS applications too. That's why students learn the cutting-edge Ruby framework for iOS. We teach collaboration with Github. Merging, rebasing, and all the potential headaches are covered so students can work fluidly with teams, Relational or Document Store? MySQL or Postgres? Mongo or Redis? Cloud or dev/null? And yes, raw SQL. Fluency in the language that makes the web beautiful is a requirement. They use SCSS and LESS to create efficient and organized front-ends. Every dev should be a basic sysop. Developers know how to setup a cloud server on AWS, deploy to Heroku, and SSH their way around any shell. From designing their own Sinatra powered API to consuming the Facebook Open Graph via RubyGems, we use the read/write web efficiently. Client-side is covered with jQuery powered interactions and an understanding of the core of Javascript. HTML is the structure that supports the web so semantics are important. Students also utilize the power of HTML5. 6. Curriculum: Methodology Whether test-driven or behavior-driven, testing is a crucial

part to professional software development. You'll assert your way to confident code with continuously integrated test-suites. Test-Driven Agile Methodology is more than just a development practice, it's a philosophy for life. Students work in teams every day and are constantly iterating. Agile Programming has a rich history and knowing it puts everything in context. We start each morning with a Programmer of the Day. problems. Monetary bounties are set and solved by programmers from around the world. Git.bo Groups can visualize their contributions, tweets, and statuses along an interactive timeline. Teamline.io A cleverly-timed ticketing system for issues ranging from the classroom to support desks. A group exam creation tool that lets students write the questions. HandRaise OpenExam.org FlatironSchool DevelopingProfessionals Assignmenator Tracking software for teachers to give assignments and track progress of each student. future Developers. Passion Aptitude Culture Flatiron Student + + Our students approach coding as a lifelong craft, rather than a means to an end. Students learn more from each other than from a lecture. Smart students means great teachers. Learning is a team sport. No assholes allowed. 11. On December 6th, The Flatiron School is hosting a Science

Fair. Select employers are invited to come to the school and see what the students have been working on over the course of the semester. This will be a great chance to get to know the students, and get a detailed look at what they've accomplished, including demos of apps they've built.
