Sunday Streets

Sunday Streets (or Ciclovia, Open Streets..) is a fun and healthy event that closes off high streets to motor vehicle traffic, and opens them up to cycling, walking, playing, shopping, dancing and pretty much any other recreational, or artistic activity.

  2. Community Benefits – Sunday Streets events build community, cultural identify

    and social engagement. – Provides people with opportunities for new social interactions and to view their city from a different perspective – There is an enormous amount of interaction between participants of all ages, incomes, occupations, and backgrounds.
  3. Environmental Benefits – Sunday Streets provides an environmental benefit by

    temporarily removing cars from the road. The more times the event is held, the greater the environmental benefit – Most open streets programs directly encourage residents to replace car usage with walking, cycling and public transport use. – It is common for local environmental organisations to participate in the event. Their taking part helps raise awareness in the community about the connections between improving the natural and built environment, the local economy, and public health.

    Council, Marrickville Council, City of Sydney, Woollahra Council, Randwick Council, Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) • Successful 2014 pilot event – Marrickville • City of Sydney identified $60,000 cost per event for 12 event Sunday Streets programme • SSROC recommended event on Marrickville – Leichhardt route • Event endorsement in NSW Transport policy “Sydney’s Walking Future” • Included in Leichhardt Council Employment and Economic Development Plan
