5. 5 HOW WE COME TO TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST Ephesians 2:1 Romans 8:7 1 Corinthians 2:14 1. What we are like by nature: a. dead in sin b. hostile to (enemies of) God c. blind to spiritual things (not able to know by experience)
6. 6 2. Therefore we cannot by our own thinking or choosing come to believe in Jesus as our Savior.
7. 7 HOW WE COME TO TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST Ephesians 2:8f Romans 10:17 3. How saving faith comes: a. It is the gift of God. b. Through hearing the message about Christ (Gospel).
8. 8 HOW WE COME TO TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST 1 Corinthians 12:3 4. The Person of the Godhead who works saving faith in our hearts is… the Holy Spirit.
9. 9 THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
10. 10 THE THIRD ARTICLE (Sanctification) I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
11. 11 What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith….
12. 12  …In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.  On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead;  And he will give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.  This is most certainly true.
13. 13 THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS 2 Thessalonians 2:14 1. The Holy Spirit calls me, that is He leads me to trust in Jesus as my Savior through the gospel. The Holy Spirit’s work is also called:  CONVERSION : (being turned around)  REGENERATION: (being born again).
14. 14 THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS Psalm 19:7f 2. The Holy Spirit enlightens me, that is He leads me to a spiritual understanding and joy through the gospel.
15. 15 THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS Ephesians 2:8-10; John 17:17; 15:5 3. The Holy Spirit sanctifies me, that is He “sets me apart” for a life of godly living through the gospel.

17. 17 TWO REMINDERS FOR GOD’S CHILDREN Matthew 12:31; 1 Thessalonians 5:19; Ephesians 4:30 1. Do not resist / grieve the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18f; Luke 11:13,28 2. Be filled continually with the Holy Spirit by faithful use of God’s Word.
