  1. What is WebRTC? WebRTC is a free, open project that

provides browsers and mobile applications with Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities via simple APIs WebRTC is a new front in the long war for an open and unencumbered web -Brendan Eich, inventor of JavaScript
  2. Where is it used? WebRTC is used in various apps

like • WhatsApp • Facebook Messenger • Hangouts • appear.in and • platforms such as TokBox
  3. How Does It work? • Get streaming audio, video or

other data • Communicate streaming audio, video or data • Coordinate signaling communication to report errors and initiate or close sessions • Get network information such as IP addresses and ports, and exchange this with other WebRTC clients (known as peers) • Exchange information about media and client capability, such as resolution and codecs
  4. How Does It work? • MediaStream: get access to data

streams, such as from the user's camera and microphone • RTCPeerConnection: audio or video calling, with facilities for encryption and bandwidth management • RTCDataChannel: peer-to-peer communication of generic data
  5. Signaling • Session control messages: to initialize or close communication

and report errors • Network configuration • Media capabilities • Key data, used to establish secure connections
