Future Digital Twin 2023: The Digital Thread for Engineering Documents

Future Digital Twin 2023: The Digital Thread for Engineering Documents

Using PDF and Word documents in the building of industrial facilities costs organizations millions in time, quality, and errors, so innovative companies are shifting documents into interoperable, reusable, data-centric digital models. This presentation will address some of the challenges of using static legacy documents and then describe the new movement around SWISS, a "digital thread for engineering documents". SWISS digital twin documents have been shown to improve productivity, reduce manual labour, shorten project times, and lower risk throughout the entire enterprise and supply chain.

Information Companies don’t store product design data (GD&T), or accounting data, or customer information, or software code, in PDF files. Consider This…

Information Must comply with ASTM B104. “Refer to SAE AS 4059.” Cm shall be calculated in accordance with AGMA 908-B89. 1.2.6 Tank wall must withstand 800psi at 900C. o Customer specs, company specs, industry standards, work instructions, supplier requirements, drawings with static drawing notes, MRO manuals, and more. o Stored in PDF, Word, PowerPoint. o “Documents” haven’t changed in 25 years. o PDF is a poor container for data, not made for the digital thread. Coverage (percent) = (2F – F2) x 100 So why is so much engineering data stored in PDF and other “bad containers”

Information Challenges With Static Documents You can’t ”reason” on a static text document; it’s merely dumb text without actionable intelligence. Static data copied from specs doesn’t get updated, creates more static data Change management and impact assessment are difficult, time- consuming, and error- prone. Extracting requirements from specs is manual and time-consuming Users spend too much time copying/pasting and manually rekeying static data Duplicating work is wasteful

Information Five Practical Use Cases Use the SWISS API to build calculators, quality checklists, and more with authoritative, live-linked data. Generate your own requirements, test plans, and specs using reusable data objects rather than duplicating work again and again. Communicate changes on data objects to everyone up and downstream. Extract requirements from drawing(s) and document(s) in seconds rather than days or weeks. Analyze drawings and documents to find opportunities for additive manufacturing – in seconds instead of months.
