  1. What is an Operator? • An operator is a kubernetes

native application • Leverages the kubernetes API (usable with kubectl & co) • Running in kubernetes as containers • Purposely built for an application • Operational knowledge baked in and automated • Best suited for complex and stateful applications (but not only!) • Example: a kafka operator specifically designed for it
  2. How to build an operator? • Utilize kubernetes CRDs to

get new API to drive application • Encode all best practices and applications specific logic behind it • Upgrades • Failure recovery • Scale Up/Down • Built like any other kubernetes controller or using tools such as the Operator Framework
  3. The Operator Framework • Operator SDK - Allows your developers

to build an Operator based on your expertise without requiring knowledge of Kubernetes API complexities • Operator Lifecycle Manager - Helps you to install, and update, and generally manage the lifecycle of all of the Operators (and their associated services) running across your clusters • Operator Metering - Enables usage reporting for Operators that provide specialized services
