1. SPARE ROOM Written by Sydney Agans
2. EXT. FRONT PORCH- NIGHT Small hands nail a sign to the front door. Reads: Spare Room. EXT. COUNTRY SIDE - NIGHT Dry hills. A gravel road ends at the entrance of a colonial style house. Dead grass and dried sticks litter the ground. The moon is out. An old rusted pickup truck speeds down the gravel road. Wheels spitting pebbles. The truck pulls into the driveway. The engine cuts off. Out steps LEONARD(31) a man wearing a tan trench coat. Collar popped. Fedora covers his eyes. Under the coat he wears a tweed brown suit with a matching brown striped tie. Pointed brown cowboy boots. Oversized dress pants. Leonard closes the truck door. He walks around to the bed of the truck. Picks up a heavy suitcase sealed tight with three large locks. Hikes up the hill towards the house. EXT. FRONT PORCH- NIGHT The wooden porch is cast in dim light. Leonard walks up the stairs. The suitcase rattles. He examines the sign on the door. Thump. Thwack. Leonard puts his suitcase down. Walks to the edge of the porch. EXT. LEFT SIDE OF HOUSE - NIGHT The air conditioning unit buzzes. A worn shovel leans against the wall. CHUNK (9) a medium, lumpy bull terrier kicks dirt onto a pile. She stops. Stares at Leonard. He waves at her. LEONARD Hi, dog. Chunk walks toward the porch. Leonard squats down. Extends a hand to Chunk. She glares at him. Ignores his advance. Walks past him. Goes through the dog door.
3. 2. INT. ENTRY WAY- NIGHT Leonard walks into the house. LEONARD Hello? Beat. LEONARD (CONT’D) I saw your sign for the spare room..... Beat. Lenard walks down the hall. INT. TV ROOM - CONTINUOUS Leonard stops in the door way. FRANK(60) A large man with a gray mustache. Balding. Wears a white tank top and gray sweat pants. Sleeping on a wide leather lazy boy. The TV plays in the background. NEWS REPORTER Breaking news! Killer still at large. Stay inside and keep your doors locked! Leonard walks into the spare room. NEWS REPORTER (O.S.) (CONT’D) Investigators know nothing about.... INT. SPARE ROOM - NIGHT The spare room is small. Walls covered with peeling dark green floral wallpaper. A twin bed sits on a wooden frame in the far corner. A patchwork quilt lies uneven. Wooden desk. An open closet door next to the desk. Leonard puts his suitcase on the bed. Undresses down to pants, boots, and an under shirt. Opens each lock in quick secession. Inside knives, rope, duct tape, and gloves are in between the clothes. He picks up the knife. Crash. Leonard tucks the knife back into the suitcase. Walks into the hallway. 2.
4. 3. INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT Wooden floors. Wooden cabinets. Green tiled counters hold beer bottles and dirty dishes. A knife block with 4 knives of varying size. A North Star refrigerator pressed against the wall. It’s turquoise paint faded and chipping. Pictures of Frank and Chunk decorate the doors. Dining room table has two chairs and a plate set. The trash is overflowing with half eaten rotisserie chickens. Framed photos of diner-style hamburgers, french fries, and milkshakes hang on the tan wall. Chunk’s butt sticks out from under the sink. She clangs around pushing containers and chemicals around with her snout. Leonard walks through the door way. Chunk steps back. She turns. A bottle of rat poison in her mouth. Leonard gasps. LEONARD Hey, hey whoa ! Leonard takes the bottle out of her mouth. He turns and puts it on top of the fridge. Chunk watches. Frowns. LEONARD (CONT’D) Little doggies like you shouldn’t play with poison. Leonard pats Chunk on the head. She scowls as Leonard walks away. INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT Small white tiled room. Tub with a translucent shower curtain. Leonard showers. Hums a tune to himself. Chunk’s shadow creeps up behind him. She holds a knife. Leonard notices. He whips the shower curtain open. Chunk is asleep on the bathroom floor. Leonard closes the curtain. Resumes to shower. INT. SPARE ROOM - NIGHT A knife cuts through the air. Leonard sits at his desk. Wears a pair of black leather gloves. Carves a wooden sculpture of a cat. He smiles. 3.
5. 4. Chunk walks through the door now anthropomorphic. He turns around. Chunk lays down. Leonard continues sculpting. Chunk pulls out a big knife. Leonard turns around. Chunk plays with a chew toy. Leonard sculpts. Chunk stands. Walks closer to Leonard. Leonard turns around. Chunk whistles. Looks at ceiling. Hands behind her back. Leonard sculpts. Beat. Chunk walks under the desk. Leonard sculpts. Beat. Chunk jumps up. Stabs Leonard in the head. Blood gushes out. CUT TO BLACK Thump. EXT. LEFT SIDE OF HOUSE - NIGHT Chunk leans the shovel against the wall. A fresh mound of dirt in front of her. CHUNK Hehehehe EXT. COUNTRY SIDE- CREDITS Leonard’s truck is set aflame. Chunk smokes a cigarette. Throws his hat into the fire. END. 4.
