Post-Traumatic Stress
Post-traumatic stress disorder, or (PTSD)The term post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD is commonly referenced in contemporary society, sometimes appropriately and sometimes not, and is described as a very extreme anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening, and distressing events. The classic example of the PTSD person is the soldier who returns from war deeply shocked and undermined by having witnessed atrocities unimaginable to most human beings. However, there are a variety of possible experiences that can generate the condition in a person and it is far more common than previously assumed. Some of these potential experiences include being in or witnessing a devastating road accident, being physically or sexually assaulted and abused, being mugged or robbed with or without a deadly weapon, a terrible illness, or seeing someone die of a terrible illness, and in some cases, very challenging child birth experiences. Some doctors will also make the argument that rather than there being a singular traumatic event that precipitates the PTSD in a patient, it is also possible that a series of smaller traumatic events over time can create the condition as well. People who are exposed to multiple traumatic events are often diagnosed as having complex PTSD.
