  1. 1Weather   Redesigning  the  Android  OS  based  mobile  applica6on

                                   -‐  Aeshvarya  Verma
  2. Why  this  App?   •  With  the  unpredictable  weather  of

Mid-‐West  region,   it’s  apparent    that  most  of  the  people  use  some  kind   of  weather  applica6on  on  their  phone.   •  A  free  applica6on  on  the  “Google  Play”  Appstore.     •  Received  reviews  from  more  than  35,000  users.*   •  Provides  a  range  of  features  that  increases  the   margin  for  improvements.                                                                                                                                                      *  Google  Play
  3. Setting  and  Project  Scope   •  This App is used

when people leave their home, office, restaurant or any other place that involves coming out of a building and going to another place. •  Also when they travel by car or public transport. •  Users are heavily dependent on the accuracy and presentation of the weather information since they plan accordingly. •  The scope of this project is to redesign the whole interface of the app to meet the user requirements and provide them an intuitive user experience but without changing the source of weather information.
  4. Fieldwork  Method  Selection   •  Since  it’s  a  mobile  phone

based  applica6on,  the   methods  involving  contextual  inquiry  or  just   interviews  doesn’t  provide  much  data  and  may   invade  users’  privacy.     •  Combina6on  of  Diary  study,  Online  post  usage   ques6onnaire  and  short  personal  interviews  are   used  in  this  project.   •  Users  involved  in  the  study  –  4   •  Every  night  a  reminder  sms  was  sent  to  every  user.
  5. Fieldwork  Data   •  The  following  were  the  eureka  moments

documented  by   the  users  throughout  the  2  weeks  of  app’s  usage:   •  The  app  crashed  when  viewing  a  content  heavy   sec6on   •  The  users  couldn’t  find  various  important  naviga6onal   menus  and  also  were  unable  to  figure  out  some   interac6on  techniques   •  They  were  annoyed  with  the  Ad  at  the  boYom  of  the   screen   •  Since  the  app  was  tested  during  the  month  of  heavy   snowfall,  users  were  oZen  interested  in  the  snowfall   amount  to  be  fallen  in  the  coming  days
  6. Fieldwork  Data  contd…   •  The  app  considerably  drained  the

baYery  of  the  users   •  Many  sec6ons  of  the  app  were  confusing  and  presented   advanced  data  to  the  users   •  Almost  all  the  users  were  impresses  by  the  anima6ons     •  They  wanted  a  more  intui6ve  customiza6on  op6ons   •  Some  users  were  struggling  to  use  the  map  view  since  it   provides  many  op6ons  and  the  icons  were  mul6-‐ func6onal   •  Some6mes,  the  temperature  shown  wasn’t  accurate
  7. Requirements   •  Physical  Requirements:     •  From  the

diary  study,  I  came  to  know  about  the  App   crashing  for  some  of  the  users  and  from  the  cultural   model,  it  is  clear  that  the  Android  OS  framework  or   the  smartphone  is  the  biggest  influencer  for  the   successful  running  of  1Weather  app.  So,  this  app  must   run  on  Android  OS  above  2.2  and  with  all  phone   screens’  sizes  greater  than  3.5  inches.
  8. Requirements  Contd…     •  Func4onal  Requirements   •  Based

on  the  diary  study  and  the  interviews,  the  users   complaint  about  the  irrelevant  informa6on  present  in  the   App.  The  flow  model  clarifies  the  informa6on  flow  to  and   fro  between  the  users  and  the  app.  So,  the  app  should  strip   down  on  some  of  the  highly  intellectual  data  or  provide  the   user  to  select  from  a  basic  or  advance  seang.     •  Should  provide  users  the  commonly  used  icons  and   interac6ons  and  not  the  3-‐dot  drop  down  menu.  The   sequence  model  depicts  the  importance  of  the  various  icon   sets  used  in  the  applica6on  and  how  they  were  seminal  in   the  comple6on  of  the  tasks  at  hand.
  9. Requirements  Contd…     •  As  seen  in  the  flow

model,  the  adver6sers  request  user   informa6on  through  the  app  and  provide  relevant  ads  to   them.  These  Ads  shouldn’t  obstruct  the  users  or  distract  them   from  doing  their  tasks  as  seen  from  the  diary  study.  The   placement  of  the  ads  should  be  away  from  the  important   controls  of  the  app  as  shown  in  the  physical  model.     •  Since  the  weather  forecas6ng  base  sta6on  are  he  main  source   of  the  weather  informa6on,  as  shown  in  the  flow  model,  they   should  provide  with  the  accurate  data  to  the  app  developers   or  the  developers  should  constantly  monitor  data  from   mul6ple  sources  for  accuracy.     •  The  app  should  be  easy  to  use  by  the  users  and  provide   customizable  widgets.
  10. Requirements  Contd…     •  The  App  shouldn’t  drain  the

baYery  much  and  is   op6mized  for  smartphone’s  usage.     •  The  app  should  display  the  snowfall  informa6on  or  any   relevant  informa6on  based  on  the  environment  in  which   the  user  is  opera6ng  the  app.  This  can  be  supported  by   the  presence  of  external  environment  in  the  flow  model   and  the  reason  for  breakdown  in  the  sequence  model  as   well.
  11. Requirements  Contd…     •  User  Requirements:   •  Since

users  are  one  of  the  main  influencers  as  seen  in   the  cultural  model  and  an  important  part  of  the  flow,   they  should  know  how  to  operate  an  android-‐based   smartphone  and  install  &  update  apps  regularly.     •  They  must  also  make  sure  that  the  phone  is  connected   to  the  Internet  when  using  or  refreshing  1Weather   applica6on.
  12. Page  Design  and  Low-‐Fidelity   Prototype   Home  Screen  showing

the  Ad  at  the  top  and  more  info  using  tabs
  13. User  Feedback   •  Tasks   •  Task  1:

Consider  you  are  using  a  high-‐end  smartphone  which  has  mul6ple   applica6ons  opened  in  the  background.  Your  phone  is  2  years  old  so   the  baYery  life  is  not  that  great.  You  uses  the  1Weather  app   regularly  but  since  you  are  in  front  of  your  laptop  most  of  the  6me,   you  just  view  the  weather  every  hour.  Set  the  refresh  rate  of  the   applica6on  to  1  hour  and  locate  the  individual  update  op6ons  to   refresh  the  app  manually.       •  Task  2:   You  have  just  finished  with  your  classes  at  1pm  and  wanted  to  have   some  lunch.  It’s  cloudy  outside  and  may  rain  too.  Look  for  the   weather  from  1:00pm  to  1:30pm  to  check  the  precipita6on  rate  and   note  the  6ming  when  it  is  least  likely  to  rain.
  14. User  Feedback   •  Issues  iden6fied   •  Lack  of

affordance  of  some  of  the  elements  in  the   interface  such  as  in  the  map  view.     •  The  user  expected  the  maps  to  be  more   interac6ve  and  with  more  func6ons  to  play  with.   •  Some  users  wanted  to  have  the  advanced  op6on   right  away  instead  of  selec6ng  it  from  the  drop   down  seangs  menu
  15. User  Feedback   •  Future  improvements   •  Improve  affordance

so  that  the  users  would  know   what  is  clickable  on  the  maps.   •  Provide  a  self  adap6ve  interface  to  the  users  so   that  the  more  tech  savvy  users  get  the  advanced   op6ons  right  away.   •  Make  the  map  view  sec6on  more  fluid  and  playful.   •  Improve  upon  the  overall  interface  of  the   applica6on  to  meet  the  ever  changing  needs  of   the  users.
