A wireless dog fence is an invisible boundary set to contain a dog or dogs to specific areas within the compound. This fence is comprised of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is fixed somewhere inside your house while the receiver is worn around your dog’s neck. With this fence the transmitter emits signals up to a certain radius where the dog is supposed to reach. The dog is not supposed to go out of the set radius and in the event it does, it is given a beeping warning and then an unpleasant sensation ‘shocks’ it around the neck.
Before the dog gets accustomed to this kind of arrangement, you need to train him on the areas he’s supposed to go and the areas he should not. For starters, don’t ambush the dog with the receiver. It is good to let the dog put on the receiver for almost a week so that he can get used to having it on its neck. By doing so, the dog will not think the uncomfortable simulation is coming from the collar; rather it will think the simulation is caused by the fence. The best training starts with the sit and stay instructions and when the dog has understood these two, you can turn on the wireless fence system.
Make sure the dog collar fits the dog well for it to give the required results. Otherwise when the collar is too tight for the dog, he will keep on barking to have it removed. On the other hand; when the collar is too lose, the simulation will not ‘reach’ the dog meaning it will walk even past the fence. All dog collars even a dog bark collar need to fit well. To check if the receiver fits snuggly on the dog’s neck try the three finger rule; your three fingers should slip well between the collar and the dog’s neck.
Just like the name suggests, you don’t need any wires to set up the fence. All you need is a working wireless fence kit; some of them come with red flags to help the dog know about the boundary physically. Most transmitters can go up to 90 feet where your dog is supposed to play or walk around without going out of the 90 feet radius. You need to figure out the shape of your compound so that you can choose the type of a wireless fence you’ll choose. There are two types of wireless dog fence and these are; the radial fence which creates a circular fence while the other one is a custom made fence to suit the shape of your compound.
The fence works well if there are no obstacles like tall buildings and trees. Your home is not suitable for a wireless fence if it has many cement block walls or if the yard is on a steep slope. If the compound has heavy landscaping, then a wireless dog fence might not work for you. Also, if your home isn’t big enough to provide a 20 feet space between your house and that of your neighbor, then a wireless dog fence is not for you. If you cannot set up the fence by yourself, then get a technician to do it for you.
