Brandau's career has spanned healthcare leadership, government, nonprofit redevelopment, and higher education. As Executive Director of the Argentine Neighborhood Development Association, she led the transformation of a 17-acre Superfund site, contaminated and abandoned for more than three decades, into a neighborhood market, working with Walmart and a coalition of public and private partners. She served three terms as a Wyandotte County Commissioner and two appointed terms on the Kansas Board of Regents, helping oversee the University of Kansas Health System and Medical Center. Today she advises healthcare and nonprofit organizations through Prosperity Consulting, and she writes about leadership, resilience, and the ways institutions shape individual lives.
