  1. Introduction to Scoliosis Scoliosis refers to the lateral bending of

the spine. The actual cause for scoliosis is not known though a good amount of research is going on in this field. The bending of spine occurs in the adolescent period when there is a spurt in growing. Scoliosis usually occurs on the thoracic spine. Thoracic scoliosis is associated with deformity of the rib cage as well as spine itself. Because of the development of rib cage asymmetry the deformity becomes clinically apparent. Elevation of one shoulder is a possible effect of this deformity. Length discrepancy is another apparent manifestation of this deformity. Scoliosis grows as years roll by at the rate of one to two degrees per month. Bracing is an effective method to control the curving effect. But it is not a cure and cannot be effective in cases where the curving is greater than 40◦.
  2. Treatment for Scoliosis Surgery is recommended for scoliosis patients in

their adolescent age with larger curve who have more growth to take place. In surgical method correction of the curve is obtained through the insertion of internal fixing tools and it is also accompanied by the fusion of some parts of the spine. In fusion process removal of disc is also involved. The amount of instrumentation required is different in each case and it is determined by clinical examination and study of the results obtained through X-ray and other imaging techniques.
  3. Adult Scoliosis Adult scoliosis is different from adolescent scoliosis. Some

people have little curves to the spine as a balance of the younger age scoliosis which does not require any treatment. But some scoliosis progress after the growth process has completed. But this growth is very slow at the rate of approximately one to two degrees per year. Spinal deformation may be related to disc degeneration or spinal arthritis. Back pain related to scoliosis is usually managed by medication, exercise, physiotherapy, cessation of smoking, weight loss etc. Surgical treatment for scoliosis for adults is recommended for adult patients with intractable pain not yielding to non surgical methods. The surgery required in adults for scoliosis is more extensive than that for the children. Period of hospitalization is around one weak for adolescents and it will take about six weeks for them to start going to the school. In the case of adults the corresponding periods will be more.
