  2.  The ability of computer systems or software to exchange

and make use of information.  Move from disconnected to joined up
  3. • Computers talking to computers – accessed by humans •

10’s 100’s 1000’s systems communicating • Using APIs • Using data standards • Exponential data flows • Linking information in the way people already expect
  4.  HL7 – standards committee  V3  FHIR 

Argonaut  EHR – Electronic Health Record  PAS – Patient Administration System  Spine – national backbone for IT interoperability  SNOMED – coding for medical terms
  5.  Are you thinking about the people?  Needs of

existing, needs of new  Sometimes conflicting interests  Are we trained negotiators?  Arbitration
  6.  Established open standards are great!  Most are not

well established  Challenges are amplified by being open and collaborative
  7.  Don’t hang around  You will augment the API

in the future  Change isn’t relevant to everyone  Make it easy to get the new stuff
  8. When done right, it benefits patients and clinicians  Improvements

to clinical safety and care  Improvements to patient experience  Work more efficiently and effectively  Enables innovation, research and cost-saving It’s easy to get it wrong and not realise the benefits
  9.  Security and Data Protection  Designing for outcomes 

Standards have to evolve  Not just talking - understanding  Day one interoperability is only the start  Don’t lose sight of the goal  Journey to Open Standards is hard, but worth it
