  1. About me: • Rebecca Laycock • Digital consultant - SPARCK

(BJSS’ Digital Design Consultancy) • Expertise in Research, UX and Service Design My experience with the NHS and healthcare: • NHS App • GP IT Futures - Buying Catalogue • Leading Optical retailer
  2. Design to Deliver RESEARCH DESIGN DELIVER Design Thinking Lean Start-up

Agile Define the problem Define the solution Product or service
  3. The process We use design thinking processes to help clients

ensure their products and services are user centred, and follow an agile methodology. The five stages of Design Thinking include: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Service Design

(Define) Research (Empathise and test) UX (Ideate and Prototype) Build

 Iterative Design
  4. Service Design A service blueprint helps to define the end-to-end

service, identify the MVP and what is out of scope whilst keeping user needs at the heart of it.
  5. Research In order to make sure we are delivering products

and services that are fit for our users we need to research their needs and observe their pain points.
  6. UX The next step in the design thinking workflow is

to create screen flows based on the research and then test them with real users. These are throw away designs used in an iterative process.
  7. Build - Iterative Design Once research and UX have uncovered

and corrected any usability issues and improved the overall experience, the screens are ready to be coded. It is important to note that this whole process is iterative and will go through more cycles of research and design once live.
  8. Collaboration Collaboration is key for design thinking to be a

success. We are a team of designers, UXers, researchers, service designers and strategists, but we work hand in hand with business analysts, devs, testers, product owners and delivery managers to ensure we meet delivery milestones.
  9. The NHS App Large scale research and design project to

deliver seven NHS services within one app. We’ve been partners for 7 years & 2012 • NHS hospitals and affiliated services receive payment for the provision of healthcare services • Our delivery won the 2013 IDG TechWorld Public Sector Project of the Year award, as well as Big Data Project of 2013 in the Techweek Europe Tech Success Awards. Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) Spine 2 Electronic Referral Service (e-RS) 2014 • Rebuilt the NHS Spine with Open Source, securely transferring the entire NHS onto this improved system delivering increased reliability, performance and resilience • Won Best Testing Project in the Public Sector” in the 2015 European Software Testing Awards 2015 • Replacement solution for the electronic referrals of first hospital or clinic appointments from GPS • The replacement addressed the gaps in the service, providing the NHS with an affordable, maintainable and expandable solution. 2018 • The NHS App provides a simple and secure way for people to access a range of NHS services on their smartphone or tablet. • BJSS were key to implementing this brand new service to reduce the workload on the front line and a key objective of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care 2019 • e-RS will be the first NHS flagship programme to move its service into the Cloud • The apps library is aiming to showcase a range of digital tools that can help the public take charge of their own health NHS App e-RS cloud, Apps library OUR KEY ENGAGEMENTS
  10. The NHS App Large scale research and design project to

deliver seven NHS services within one app.
  11. The Secretary of State set us the challenge of designing,

researching and building the first NHS app by the end of 2018. It was to include 7 core services: Symptom checking Patient record access GP Appointment booking Repeat prescriptions Data sharing Organ Donation End of life care preferences Challenge
  12. The service design work helped to map out the app’s

user journey and defined MVP. Service Design
  13. The service design work helped to map out the app’s

user journey and defined MVP. Service Design
  14. We interviewed and tested with a range of users to

ensure that the app is suitable and accessible for all. Including over 100 face-to-face interviews spread across: • Geographical location • Gender • Age (16-75) • Ethnicity • Socioeconomic group • Employment status • State of health (including long-term conditions) • Assisted digital support requirements & access needs Research
  15. UX We took insights from the research along with the

business requirements to help us start designing screens to test with real users.
  16. The NHS App went live in December 2018. Since then

the team have been working hard to take an iterative approach to improving the life service, as well as building new services and features into the app, like nominating a pharmacy. Outcomes
  17. GP IT Futures
Large scale service design project to help

the NHS create a Buying Catalogue that allows for equal and effortless, high- quality purchasing outcomes.
  18. To build a procurement platform where clinical commissioners and other

NHS buyers can find, evaluate and purchase catalogue-assured IT solutions, and to ensure a fair distribution of market entrants. Challenge
  19. Service Design The service design work helped us to map

out the end-to-end journey for both the on and off catalogue process which form part of the service, as well as define the MVP. 20. Research The research helped to identify the target users (Buyers,

Suppliers and Authority). We interviewed and tested prototypes with over 50 users. It included both discovery interviews to learn user needs, and usability testing to ensure designs were user friendly.
  21. UX We created clickable screen flows based on the insight

from the user research. These designs were tested with users in a usability session and then iterated on and amended, to improve the user experience.
  22. Outcomes By working in a multidisciplinary team and collaborating we

helped the NHS to understand the MVP for the service, as well as build and launch the Supplier on-boarding journey.

Over 80 suppliers have now signed agreements to on-board onto the catalogue.
  23. Challenges • Governance and waterfall: The way governance works often

means project plans have to be laid out in advance, to qualify for funding. This sometimes results in a waterfall approach. • Working in silos: Often there are multiple teams operating within one program which makes it difficult to work collaboratively and remain aligned. • GDS assessment: Projects have to pass government standards, this puts pressure on teams to deliver and meet specific requirements. • Accessibility: To be fully inclusive, products and services we build must be accessible. It is often tricky to access particular user profiles and make time for accessibility testing in projects.
  24. How can we overcome the challenges? • Governance and waterfall:

Have a clear roadmap with a defined MVP, allowing the project to work in agile sprints whilst still meeting delivery milestones.
 • Working in silos: Regular show and tells, visibility, transparency and team building events.
 • GDS Assessments: Be prepared for this, plan ahead and implement design thinking methodologies.
 • Accessibility: Use recruitment companies and charities to help you target people with specific disabilities. Factor accessibility testing into plans from the beginning and be aware of accessibility guidelines.
  25. Take away points • The five stages of Design Thinking

include: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. • Research is essential in projects to understand user needs and ensure products and services are user centred. • Multidisciplinary and cross team collaboration is key for the success of the project. • There are a range of challenges we face in projects such as GDS assessments, funding, working in silos and accessibility.
  26. Quiz 1. How many users should you test with in

    a usability study?

  27. Quiz 1. How many users should you test with in

a usability study? a) Five b) Ten c) Fifteen d) An unlimited amount of users Answer: “Testing with 5 people lets you find almost as many usability problems as you'd find using many more test participants.” Neilson Norman. Note: There are exceptions regarding this number, depending on the methodology and the number of profiles in a user group.
  28. Quiz 2. What does ‘UX’ stand for?
