PROBLEMS: THE STRESSFUL INBOX OF A STUDENT-ATHLETE.
  2. THE STRESSOR WE ARE ADDRESSING IS the unavoidable incremental stress

arising from mentally managing the daily influx of emails coming in from separate parts of one’s life FOR student-athletes. THE CALMER lies in the ability to both separate and segregate the different aspects of their lives (academic, professional, athletic, social) & prioritize emails and tasks… WHICH THEY WILL EXPERIENCE through a simple & seamless means by which they can assign labels and prioritize to emails and senders, and have access to segregated inboxes.
  3. STRESS MODEL STRESSOR emails not only come from completely different

sources, but also of very different levels of importance…and trying to manage all of this leads to high levels of incremental stress. ELEVEN (11) INTERVIEWS WHY CARE… it takes a lot of effort to switch between different mindsets, which is energy wasted, and with everything going in, it’s already hard enough to focus.
  4. WE DECIDED TO… ¡ HOME SCREEN: create a new home screen,

which would give you the ability to click on a single icon (i.e. academic or athletic), and view only those emails ¡ INBOX INTERFACE: make the inbox interface highly and easily customizable to make it feel personal and more soothing to the student-athlete PROTOYPE CONCEPT DESIGN
  5. WE FOUND THAT… ¡ People really appreciated the introduction to filtering,

many had no idea it even existed or if they did, how to use it ¡ Customizing icons made people very excited and happier when reading their emails- made them feel more in control of their inbox ¡ People found themselves better at accomplishing their tasks because the inbox isolation allowed them to focus on one thing at a time ¡ However, for some people it didn’t change their email habits because they did not want to give into the system…. TRIAL RESULTS
  6. •  Deeper integration with Gmail •  Unread message counts •

Automatically pull labels •  Effect is that although a student- athlete may appear to be able to multi-task, it is not only causing them stress, but diminishing their performance in each category LIFESOLATION. SUMMARY & NEXT STEPS
  7. TAKEAWAY: THE ABILITY TO SEGREGATE INBOXES, OR LIFESOLATE IS VALUABLE

TO STUDENT- ATHLETES. ACUETARA TCRIMM FEDRONIC @ STANFORD.EDU
  8. ¡  “I really like the idea. It's easier to keep

track of emails and help keep everything together.” ¡  “I liked it's simplicity and organization. Very easy to use and helpful” ¡  “I would consider using it permanently because it makes finding specific messages easier.” ¡  “I would if I didn't have to keep going back to the main page in order to open the next category. I also wish each label on the home page gave you a number for how many new emails you have, rather than opening each tab until you find a new email. I like the organization, though, and it makes it easier to go back and find a certain email.” USER RESEARCH
  9. ¡ For our first prototype, we made a simple powerpoint deck

that gave the illusion of going through different pages of someone’s email, even though it wasn’t your own and not customizable ¡ We showed a lot at once: § Ability to separate inboxes, have a different home screen § Digest of weekly and daily evens § Additional toolbar to easily add tasks and edit calendar events DESIGN PROCESS
