  1. Scoliosis • A condition where the back curves • So

common that 1 in 10 has level of curvature • When extreme it can significantly impact the life quality of the patient • The severity is tracked through measuring the Cobb angle • An angle of >40° is considered severe • Usually, the angle increases 0.5° per year
  2. Treatments Surgery For extreme cases, the spine is fixed with

rods. It’s an extreme measure but the best there is now. Braces Can help slow down the deterioration. Training There is no conclusive research, but some practitioners work with patients to “train” the body to slow and relieve the symptons
  3. Measuring curvature • Requires an x-Ray • Only done by

specialized orthopedics, normal doctors may x-ray but will not give the angles
  4. Use cases Even estimated angles, together with “correct” ones given

by a doctor, can help: 1. Track curvature over time 2. Measure impact of straining activities (sports, work)
  5. Next possible steps • Experiment with training a model on

bare-back pictures • Look at relationships between front and side angles • Try adding tracking markers on the spine to detect actual curvature • Analyse more patient data and trends
