Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, is an ophthalmologist and the owner and president of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in 1967 in Tehran, Iran, he was raised in a family with deep political and medical connections. His paternal grandfather was a high-ranking military officer and politician who served as the Minister of Agriculture during the Shah’s regime. On his mother’s side, He is descended from Iranian royalty, with his maternal grandfather being three generations removed from the King of Iran. Despite his family’s prominent background, his grandfather’s legacy in ophthalmology inspired Him to pursue a career in the field.
His grandfather pioneered Iranian ophthalmology, helping establish the country’s first ophthalmology department and addressing the trachoma pandemic that had caused widespread blindness. His grandfather’s contributions significantly influenced Him, and by the time he was five years old, he had decided to follow in his footsteps and dedicate his life to improving vision care.
In 1983, during the Iran-Iraq War, Dr. Massoumi moved to the United States with his mother and younger sister. They settled in Marin County, California, where He quickly adapted to his new life, learning English and adjusting to American culture. After completing high school at Marin Catholic High School, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a double major in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. His academic excellence earned him acceptance into St. Louis University Medical School, where he graduated with distinction in research. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Upon completing his residency, He initially planned to return to California. However, a shortage of ophthalmologists in Western Oklahoma led him to join the BVA practice in 2002. Motivated by his grandfather’s public service dedication, he stayed in Oklahoma. Over the years, he introduced advanced technology, expanded specialized services, and founded the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014, which brought retinal and plastic surgery specialties to the area. He continues to provide world-class cataract, glaucoma, and laser treatments, ensuring that patients in Western Oklahoma can receive top-tier care close to home.
In addition to founding the Oklahoma Eye Institute, Dr. Massoumi recognized the need for more local surgical facilities. He opened the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and an office-based operating room in Elk City, reducing the burden on patients who previously had to travel for surgery. His long-term goal is to attract more ophthalmologists to the region and ensure that Western Oklahoma remains self-sufficient in vision care.
Outside of his professional life, He is married and has two daughters. The family shares a passion for martial arts, with each member holding a black belt in Taekwondo. His youngest daughter holds a second-degree black belt. He also enjoys traveling and has participated in medical mission trips, including one to Vietnam, where he performed eye surgeries to restore vision for those in need.
Dr. Kamran Massoumi’s work has significantly impacted the availability of high-quality ophthalmology care in Western Oklahoma. His dedication to expanding access to vision care has ensured the region can meet its ophthalmology needs locally. As he continues to grow his practice, He remains committed to providing the best care possible to his community, solidifying his legacy in Western Oklahoma’s healthcare landscape.
