  1. Gaining the competitive advantage Horticulture: • Value of produce static

or decreasing. • Labour costs increasing. • Market wants ‘local produce’. • Energy Costs static or increasing. Poultry • Value of produce static or decreasing. • Feed costs increasing. • Value to sustainable production systems? • Energy Costs static or increasing. Growing more for less. Margins: Decreasing
  2. Fuel Options Low grade recycled ‘chip’: • Low ‘headline price’:

dry and high energy content / ton. • ‘Being told’ it is contaminant free ≠ Suitable for burning. Sawmill residue: • Low ‘headline price’ delivered by bulk walking floor. • Moisture content ≠ energy content. Consider contaminants. Cord wood, chipped on site: • Easy to ‘see’ what you have purchased. • Allow for drying losses. 100tons@ 55% = 64tons 30%. • Chipper outputs not always consistent. Dried high quality chip: • Maximum convenience factor for chip. • Highest cost chip. Pellets: • Lowest cost boilers and feed systems. • Highest cost fuel. What will your fuel p/kWh cost be? Growing more for less.
  3. Fuel Handling and Storage •Walking Floor: Recycled ‘chip’, Sawmill residue,

Chipped Cord wood: • Handle wide range of fuel quality • Large volume with minimal mechanical handling. • Higher initial Purchase cost. Sweep Feed: Chipped cord wood, dried high quality chip: • Lower initial Purchase cost than walking floor. • Smaller stores / more mechanical handling. •Pellets hoppers / bins: Wood Pellets • Lowest capital cost. • Highest cost fuel. Consider the actual life time costing of plant Growing more for less.
  4. RHI Boiler sizing: • How many kWh can you get

from a 195kW or a 995kW boiler in 24hrs, 1 year and 20years. • Know your true running costs. • Know your true maintenance costs. RHI considerations: • One larger system with more extensive District mains. • Tier 1 Payments on heat generated not used. • Multiple smaller systems. Match your boilers actual capacity to site load. Growing more for less.
  5. District Mains. Heat Losses: • Low losses in kW/h can

accrue to higher than expected total annual losses. Running temperatures: • Delivery temperatures to be understood. The higher the temperature the greater the output of fan coils. • But the greater the heat losses in the pipe. • Opportunity to run wide temperature differentials. Pipe medium: • Pex: Flexible but reduction in life if run ‘hot’ for sustained periods. Be certain of detail of manufacturers guarantee. • Steel: Higher running temperatures but more specialist installation Know your % transmission losses? Growing more for less.
  6. Horticulture: Energy use • Highly varied load over season and

over a single 24hr period. • Loads will be crop, site and grower specific. • Correctly designed a 995kW boiler can deliver over 4MW output to give an early morning temperature lift for a short period. • Detailed modelling and correctly sized buffers can give a significant net reduction in installed capacity for no reduction in heat units delivered. • Top up boilers linked to Biomass through site wide control system give extra lift What is your optimum buffer size? Growing more for less.
  7. Energy use in Poultry Highly varied over the whole duration

course of the crop. Base load and LPG top up: • 50% of peak load equating to 87% of annual demand. Relatively stable hour on hour heat loads. Consider your mix of Biomass and conventional heat. Growing more for less.
  8. Heat Delivery into Poultry sheds Direct experience of (in no

order of preference) • DACS • Draper • Big Dutchman • Wessleman • Cubo Full design and installation service for heaters, pipe work and control valves. Consider the best heat delivery method for your sheds. Growing more for less.
  9. Heat Delivery in Glass Houses Steel Pipes: • Higher Temperatures

and pressure • Higher initial cost Plastic Pipe: • Limited Temperature lift • Limitations to pressure. • Lower cost Know your temperature lift: Steel or plastic pipes. Growing more for less.
  10. Limitations of Biomass in Horticulture CO2 • Even with scrubbers

and filters injection of Biomass CO2 into Glass houses is not currently feasible. Maintenance: • Higher costs than for Gas or Kerosene Boilers. • Lower the quality of fuel the higher the maintenance costs. Eligible structures: • RHI cannot be claimed for heating of ‘open structures’ What will your maintenance costs be? Growing more for less.
  11. Technical Excellence • Professional engineers committed to attention to detail

throughout design • Turn key development ensures systems are designed as an effective package • Sound engineering practice is at the heart of every system • Market-leading equipment incorporated throughout • Strong direct relationships with manufacturers • Established lines of communication Growing more for less.
  12. Project Stage: System Commissioning • Experienced In-house electrical and boiler

commissioning engineers • PC-based graphical interface to all system parameters key commissioning tool • Integrated overall commissioning strategy facilitated by close partnership Growing more for less.
  13. Support from Energy Innovations All Systems incorporate remote access link

for monitoring and remote maintenance Ongoing service and maintenance throughout system life Genuine 24hr call out service for heat critical contracts. Growing more for less.
  14. Summary of factors to consider: Optimum design for maximum life

time return on investment 1 Optimum buffer size EIUK have detailed energy load models 2 What will your fuel p/kWh cost be Real life examples and fuel analysis service. 3 Actual life time costing of plant 20 years experience of Biomass 4 Match boilers actual capacity to site load Analysis of energy use & industry leading boilers 5 Know your % transmission losses Site specific energy modelling. 6 Maintenance costs Comprehensive service package 7 Mix of Biomass and conventional heat We won’t necessarily suggest a bigger boiler! 8 Poultry: Best heat delivery method for your sheds Actual experience of 6 different heater manufactures 9 Glass: Know your lift: Steel or plastic pipes. Detailed experience of glass house production Growing more for less.
