The film opens with Saul during his darkest hour - on the verge of becoming addicted to heroin. However, a mysterious spirit shows him memories of his late mother before her suicide, guiding him to an understanding of where his state of mind will ultimately lead him. By understanding the suffering of his mother, he comes to terms with his own. The Team We are a 5 person team. The production of this film spans 9 months. It will premiere in May 2019. As the team is small, we assumed a multitude of roles. My primary responsibilities were that of the Production Manager and Environment Designer. Production Manager As the production manager, I oversaw the schedule and deadlines for the project to assure we were on track for the premiere. I worked closely with every team member to understand their goals and abilities, max- imizing the efficiency of the team. I also worked to resolve conflict and problem solve issues with the pipeline and filing system. Environment Designer I took the environment all the way from conception to the end of pro- duction, beginning with early concept art and ultimately modeling, tex- turing, lighting, and compositing the scenes. My focus was on stortelling and adding symbolism to give the character’s world meaning. Challenges The greatest challenge in this project was overseeing the production and assuring that everyone was on the same page. Further, developing a scene for low lighting was interesting, as there is a fine line between being too dark for the screen and too bright for the mood. It has to have enough muntins to be interesting, but giving it too many will block too much of the light. We settled for a window with three panes, casting a T-Shaped shadow across the room. Couch The couch is the main piece of furniture in the living room and sets the tone for the character of the house. It has to be downtrod yet nostalgic and familiar. We settled for a couch with three main cushions to allude to the fact that the house was equipped to hold a larger family, despite its current emptiness. 3D Maya, Photoshop Lighting and Mood Saul’s environment is a reflection of his mental state and overgoes a development throughout the story that juxtaposes that of the protagonist. The light has to exhibit a duality that foreshadows the presence of a solution to Saul’s depression, lighting up the fact that there is a way out and it has always been within him. Main Light Source These light paintings played an important role in the design of the windows and served as a guide for the rest of the compositing process. As the camera would move around within this environment, it had to look appealing and show depth from multiple angles. Photoshop Environment Development

Saul stands in the shadow, minimally illuminated by the light of his memory. The main light source is the orange lamp that the dove will have previously transformed into. The colors are warm and bright, with violet shadows, yet contain some murky greens to keep an emotional and uncertain edge to the suddenly bright scene. It was challenging to figure out how much of an effect the light has on its sur- roundings. It doesn’t touch the back of the kitchen. It only shines on the mother and set of furniture she is interacting with. 3D Maya, Photoshop DUST 3D Maya, Substance Painter, Arnold 5 Environment Models, Textures, and Lights LIGHTING Hope The way out for Saul has always been with- in his grasp - he only had to be open to change. This is represented by the source of light coming from outside the confines of his four walls. This strong light has to be bal- anced out with fill light. I experimented with rim and fill lighting to separate him from the background, playing with warm and cool colors to achieve the desired mood. I also explored angles of light. Too much light from both sides made his face seem flat, while not enough light made him fall into darknes and merge with the background. 3D Maya, Arnold 5

These were designed with the lighting siitua- tion of the environment in mind. Because she will primarily show up in a warmly lit, nostalgic space, her colors should be able to stand out with some blue, but also blend into the scene with warm tones. We settled for a combination of a rosy top and denim skirt. Photoshop Character Design

    - 0181 www.erlance.com [email protected] 15 Story “Helpless” is a series of novels and currently in the works to be pitched as an animated series. It follows a a young, empathetic girl who wants to come to terms with the murder of her mother and the surroundingircumstances, but uncovers a civil war that threatens to kill her. Theme Helplessness is a choice, not the effect of a circumstance. Excerpt Book 2 Chapter 12: In My Veins Raziel sucked in his breath. The engine roared like a lion announcing his reign over his pride – the rusty and polished vehicles around them alike fading into the background as no more than decoration in a world that belonged to them. Raziel’s heart pounded in sync with the smoke exhaust, shooting small puffs of clouds over the blacktop behind them. “Yeehaa!” Raziel screamed. He screamed it again. And again. He screamed it for the whole world to hear – the world that blurred past him as the grey buildings of Dovewith disap- peared into the wind, and a river stretched out along the highway. It seemed to become more saturated with color the further they got from the city. The pink sunlight kissed the glistening waters and smiled at Raziel from the horizon, dipping his grey helmet and everything he saw through its visor a deep rosy red. When the world flew past him like this, everything around him seemed to disappear. He knew that meant that to the rest of the world, he must have disappeared, too, and although his own insignificance scared him, he found a measure of comfort in know- ing that everything was so fleeting – this moment of bitter free- dom, the color of the light on the river, his voice echoing through the wind. A silent smile crept up Raziel’s face. With or without his voice ringing into the blurry landscape, the colors didn’t change. With or without him, the world wouldn’t be different. His smile slowly faded. There is only one way to get to Dovewith. But just like every other way out, it is not an option. The city of Dovewith lay only a single train ride away. The train passed over their village like a constant reminder, teasing them as it looked down upon them from between the edges of the mountains. Without tickets, they could not leave. With- out documents, they could not buy them. So they had to stay until the shadows crept up on them - and with them, her brother, Daniel. Not afraid to show the scars born from his wings in a world where being who you are born as is punishable by torture and death, he lurks in the shadows his sister casts. On his side, only war and grief, invisible to her. On her side, a lavish market with fruits and flowers. Will she ever look back to see who has been guiding her? Photoshop Concept Painting

She seeks refuge on the streets from a home in which she is branded a monster. There, she meets Alan and a group of ragtag orphans. They form a team for survival and move into an abandoned bus, commiting acts of thievery to sustain themselves. Helpless Daniel Angelium After murdering his mother, Daniel joins the quest to avenge the Angels and reinstate their power over the people. In the process, Daniel makes an enemy of his sister, the last Angel, and sets out to kill her. Or so she is led to believe. Unbeknownst to her, their mother’s death was not the heartless act of hate she believed it to be. As long as he was his sister’s worst enemy, Danniel knew she could be safe. And as long as everyone believed that she was the only Angel, Daniel could keep his strength hidden to protect her. Character Design 17

    - 0181 www.erlance.com [email protected] 21 The Glass King Environment design for Daniel’s room, a metaphor for his state of mind. The room is a prison cell without a lock, just as the raven is trapped in a cage with an open door, yet it still does not escape. It likes the comfort found in its chains. The chess board depicts a game in its final stage, the opposing side (black) standing strong and protecting their people against the glass king, caught between both sides. His comrades have fallen. What side does he stand on? 3D Maya, Nuke Helpless Close Up The source of light on the battle field is the Angel: Daniel’s sister and the victim of his brutality. She is also the queen on the other side of the chessboard. A queen that stands to lead and protect her people, not cower behind them. But could she have come this far without him? 3D Maya, Nuke Concept Painting

Their city was falling. In order to replenish the energy that kept them afloat, they must return to their original homeland and overcome what they had abandoned long ago. Environment Painting Happy Father’s Day Ilustrated Book Published by Tredition Austria Happy Father’s day is an open letter from a daughter to her father - with a twist. In her words, the ten-year-old describes her definition of a father, and congratulates all those who fit that image. Visual Development & Environment Design Shelly Gertan ERLANCE An inner world of curiosity, possibility, and imagionation, Erlance’s vision tells the story of what could have been. She explores through art what she wants to learn about the world - about humanity’s thoughts, dreams, and purpose. She juxtaposes people to circumstances and crafts how their new environments change them. As an innately curious person, Erlance is constantly learning and seeking new oppor- tunities to do so. As an employee, co-worker, and friend, she is diligent, empathetic, and understanding. She is a problem solver, an independent thinker, and a leader who dares to take responsibility over her own work and actions. She wants to believe that every conflict can be resolved with an honest and prideless conversation - which would avoid the start to every good story.
