Frontier Galvanizing, legally Frontier Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Inc., has provided corrosion protection with unmatched consistency for more than 75 years. From its headquarters in Buffalo, the company delivers hot-dip galvanizing services that protect the steel foundations of modern life. Whether reinforcing bridges, highways, stadiums, or utility systems, Frontier ensures critical infrastructure remains durable, dependable, and ready to withstand the demands of time and environment.
The company’s journey began in 1948 on Austin Street, where it established a reputation for reliability and skilled artistry. By the late 1960s, infrastructure growth pushed demand beyond its facility’s limits. In 1970, Ray V. Pierce and shareholders purchased the business and set it on a new course. Relocating to Elmwood Avenue soon after, Frontier gained the space and resources to pursue more ambitious projects, marking the beginning of its transformation into an industry leader.
With Ray’s brother, Lewis G. Pierce, joining leadership, Frontier expanded further through careful land acquisitions and facility upgrades. Added galvanizing lines and outdoor laydown yards created capacity for larger steel assemblies and greater order volumes. These improvements allowed the company to serve state transportation departments, public utilities, contractors, and energy providers. At the same time, its workforce grew steadily to meet the increasing scope and scale of its commitments.
Industry recognition has validated Frontier’s Excellence in craftsmanship and process control. In 1998, the American Galvanizers Association awarded the company for its work on Franklinville Bridge #31, highlighting its ability to meet demanding standards. Awards like this reflect not only technical expertise but also the collaboration and precision that remain central to Frontier’s identity across every project it undertakes.
Frontier has consistently invested in advancing both quality and sustainability. Improvements such as continuous flux treatment, hydrochloric acid regeneration, and hex-free passivation have streamlined production while reducing environmental impact. Membership in galvanizing associations across North America and Europe ensures access to research, regulations, and best practices, allowing the company to remain adaptive and aligned with global standards in an evolving industry.
The company’s expertise has been showcased on projects such as the Daytona Motor Speedway, Peace Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, Boston’s Green Line Extension, and Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium. Beyond the U.S., millions of pounds of galvanized steel have been shipped to international markets, reflecting Frontier’s global reputation. Today, under the leadership of Lewis G. Pierce and his son, Robert, Frontier Galvanizing continues to build on its heritage while embracing innovation to deliver results that endure.
