Why Communication Skills Training Misses the Mark
Most communication training focuses on techniques for managing conversations – how to ask open-ended questions, how to remember names, how to find common ground quickly.
This approach treats conversation like a skill to be mastered rather than a natural human interaction to be enjoyed. It creates people who are technically proficient at talking but somehow miss the point of actually connecting.
The best conversationalists I know aren't following any techniques. They're genuinely curious about other people, they listen because they want to understand, and they share authentically about their own experiences.
You can't workshop your way to genuine interest in other people. Either you find humans fascinating or you don't. And if you don't, no amount of networking training will make you good at building relationships.
