  4. MENTAL HEALTH MENTAL HEALTH The Wise Way is Not New!

These models represent millennia of human thought. It’s amazing, really. Since people first began writing down stories, we know that life’s problems haven’t changed much. As far back as the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans, people have struggled to understand and control their emotions, to deal with the life crises that arise from time to time, to get along well with others, and to avoid making their lives worse. No matter who you read, whether it is Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Freud, or Jung – the basic premise of much of human discomfort arises from the same mistake. When problems arise (and they always do!) most people tend to REACT rather than RESPOND.

  6. MENTAL HEALTH MENTAL HEALTH The Good News: With The Wise

Way, you can Learn to Respond rather than Blindly React to any situation There are really only FOUR available responses to any problem, so even in the midst of a terrible situation, coming up with an appropriate response doesn’t take a lot of thought. You can choose to: Solve the problem: If you have the means to change the situation for the better than by all means do so. Feel better about the problem: If you can’t solve the problem, sometimes changing your emotional response will help. Changing the way you feel about a problem can reduce stress levels. Tolerate the problem: Sometimes the best you can do is accept that this problem has come into your life, and learn to tolerate your emotions. This might allow you the time and space to figure out the best solution. Stay miserable: You always have the choice to do nothing, to stay miserable and make things worse.
