Fashion was quickly imitated in bourgeois circles; in the eighteenth and seventeenth centuries a large part of the population was wearing it, even in the most popular circles in a simpler and less whaleish version. People's women who want to imitate the great ladies are laughed at by cartoonists, but socially accepted.
