No CMS for you

No CMS for you

Presentation that I delivered at WordUp Edinburgh 2013 (http://wordup.wpscotland.org/edinburgh2013/).

The slides are about how CMS's are too open and freely distributed, and they touch on my experience of working at Barnsley Council.

  1. Muggle, a term from the Harry Potter book series by

    J. K. Rowling, refers to a person who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born into the magical world. - Wikipedia
  2. The theory - A CMS is great if you have

a team of trained CMS users - Letting users loose on the CMS will reduce support calls - You can lock down the CMS to stop users doing silly things
  3. Train the users - In what? - Using your CMS

    - Writing good copy? - Choosing good images? - Have an approval mechanism?
  4. That didn't happen (for me) - Council site == wikipedia

    - Some users could not (did not want to) be trained - Letting the users lose increased support calls - Users found a way around lockdowns!
  5. ‘Asylum and immigration, benefits, council tax, emergencies, grants, legal advice,

trading standards, voluntary organisations, welfare rights and financial advice.’ - http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/advice-and-benefits/
  6. What did I learn? - We needed to take the

power back - YOU are the expert - Don't undervalue your skills - A restaurant would not invite the customers to cook the food (well some would)
  7. An approach - Say NO CMS FOR YOU to the

majority of your customers - Your customers have the knowledge - They only need to provide the RAW copy - CMS's are for YOU, the experts!
